American armor...ineffective

Recommended Posts

Just saw this peice on ABC news about the new much more effective roadside bombs the insurgents are now using against the US troops, they said the insurgents are now using special roadside bombs that can be easily camouflaged to match the colour of the sidewalk gravel. When the operator spots a convoy approaching, he triggers the motion sensor, which is basically an IR beam. When this beam is cut, the bomb goes off in a way that can pierce 4 inch hich armor at a distance of 10-20 feet because of the ingenius design of the bomb. The side of the bomb that faces the road is curved inside, when it projects, it forms a high-velocity very hot ballistic projectile....Sorry I can't find a link but that is another bump in the road for the US troops...roadside bump that is that may very well cost the Americans another 81 deaths this november as were the casualties this month...I hope all you war mongers are happy

Sounds like a higher-tech claymore, with the face-shape reverse. Fun for the whole family (Y)

That's exactly what I was thinking...but if you need to push a button to activate it what purpose does the Infrared beam have?

Seems like more complication for no benefit, goes against military rule number 1 K.I.S.S..

Claymores have been around since the Korean War if I'm not mistaken, this is hardly a new threat. Reminds me of the sensationalism that surrounded the SCUD missile.

No it is just like the missles and rounds we use in our shells. It's a cone shape inside. As the cone hits the object, the force of the object pushes the cone inward, heating up the area around and inside the cone, which makes it pierce the hole. They demonstrated this on MailCall on one episode.

This kind of explains it, but the picture is a little bad

I think it's because if you only had the IR beam, it could get activated by a passing car, whereas this way you can wait until US troops are about to go through, activate the thing, run off somewhere the soldiers can't shoot you or catch you, and let them die.

I am impressed by the toughness and skills of the terrorists in Iraq. It seems their 2 years of training on field did them a lot of good.

That would be true if they were loyal to the people of Iraq and the state of Iraq

but they are not, they are fighting for a person who wants to control Iraq for his own favour a person that would slay hundreds of thousands of Iraqies without a second thought the kind of person that even Saddam Hussein would have captured and have him and all of his famliy killed for treason... but US is not Saddam and that man must be captured and brought to justice.

I think it's a moot point at this time. Iraq isn't stable enough without the influence of a dictator like Saddam, and will most likely split into at least three different countries. The formation of a Kurdish state is pretty much guaranteed, and tensions between Sunnis and everyone else is already driving a wedge between them, evident in the drafting of the Iraqi constitution, which many Sunnis were extremely upset about (rightly so).

However, despite my disagreement with the U.S. occupation of Iraq, I think that the insurgents/terrorists/"freedom fighters"/whatever garbage term you want to use are in the wrong for hampering their country's recovery. The U.S. has stated that once a stable democracy is in place in Iraq, they will leave. Fine. If the insurgents really want to help Iraqis, they will alow the police and military be trained, and the recovery efforts go about their business. Once things are back to 'normal', and the country is back on its feet, politely ask the U.S. to leave according to their own words. If they refuse, then unleash.
