The moves are designed to bring them back to profitability.

2005 is the first year in quite some time where they are expected to post a loss, AFAIK.

On top of the last two replies if they start in on getting awesome fuel efficiency that will probably help in the long run as well.

That was the problem all along. The japanese focused on fuel efficiency while GM and Ford focused on putting TV on the back seat. Now they're paying for it.

^true....GM and Ford just did not care about safety and gas mileage well enough (I mean have you heard about the ignition switch thingy?....those house fires....tisk tisk, and gas mileage....sheesh...)

and I remember on TV....Adam Carolla Show: the guy compared a 1970's VW VAN to current day Ford Explorer SUV....the VW seated like 7ish, and the Ford seats like 5....THE 1970's VW VAN GETS BETTER GAS MILEAGE THAN A CURRENT DAY FORD SUV.....30ish YEAR DIFFERENCE!, UNNACCEPTABLE .....FORD GRADE F

and the truth be told, people realized that they don't need big gas gusling SUVs, when they have nothing to transport in them, let alone wasting so much money on gas....

but at the same time, what are we going to do when the Hybrids begin to die from age....i mean battery acid is a bitch

But yes GM, FORD, and the rest are to blame for their own downfall....when you make too many of a product and it just sits there, you make no money, you loose money, and you advertize out the ass (Marketing costs money).....which means they can't pay their bills off in time, that hurts their parts supplyer , i.e. DELPI (who filed for Bankruptcy)....who then has to lay off people to meet costs, hurting their mini-suppliers.....

and with those 3 main companies: GM, DELPI, FORD hurting, the American Ecconomy hurts
