CNN says computer glitch caused Cheney 'X'

ATLANTA, Nov. 23 (UPI) -- CNN officials say a big black 'X' that appeared over the face of Vice President Dick Cheney during a news report was a technical malfunction.

CNN officials released a statement apologizing for the "unfortunate but very brief graphic" that flashed twice over Cheney's face as he gave a speech blasting critics of the war in Iraq, the New York Post reported Wednesday.

"It's the sort of thing that, just like your computer will glitch and will suddenly lock up and do something weird," CNN Technical Operations Chief Steve Alperin said. "Our equipment does the same thing on occasion."

Anchor Dan Kagan said the "X" was meant to cue up a CNN logo that was supposed to come on at the end of Cheney's speech, the Post said.

Cheney's office told the Post the vice president had yet to personally hear from the cable news network.

It probably did happen because CNN are known to be a bunch of dumbasses when it comes to running thier computer systems. They were hit by msblast AND Sasser, and the best that they can say from their TECHNICAL OPERATIONS CHIEF is "It's the sort of thing that, just like your computer will glitch and will suddenly lock up and do something weird,". Well no, my computer does not glitch, suddenly lock up or do anything wierd, you are just a dumbass.

Actually I work in TV and our Chyron graphics system behaves in a very similiar way when a invalid graphic ID is called up. For example, if I meant to call up graphic #55556 but instead I call up #5556, it will display a placeholder graphic if nothign valid is in that slot. If you have that source in your downstream, then boom it goes out on air. Not that I have ever put somthing accidentally on air that wasn't supposed to...
