Caught drifting

Today I had my first encounter with a police officer regarding what he thought was a traffic violation. Every single day on the way home from my office I drift or powerslide in my Bimmer across one specific intersection. It is a left-hand turn and when the light turns green I have 5 lanes to prepare for the drift (the oncoming traffic lanes) and another 5 lanes to actually drift and the tarmac is very nice. Keep in mind I do need all that space since I drive a 5-Series and after all it is a big and heavy car, definitely not as nimble as a 3-Series. Since I do this every day I've perfected it, and I can drift beautifully across that intersection.

Today was no exception. As I approached that intersection I routinely turned off traction control and put the car in 1st gear (I do this without thinking now). I drifted perfectly and even got smoke from the tires, and then drove calmly as a law-abiding citizen. What I didn't see was that there was a cop 300m ahead of me and he didn't seem to appreciate it as much as I did. He pulled a U-turn to stop me and the conversation went like this:

Me: Hello officer, is there a problem?

Cop: Why are you in a hurry?

Me: I'm not

Cop: Then why were you going so fast?

Me: I wasn't driving any faster than the speed limit

Cop: I saw you drive through that turn completely sideways, and there was smoke.

Me: I don't see the problem.

Cop: You could have hit another car driving like that.

Me: That's true, but I didn't. Everything was under control.

Cop: Didn't they teach you that you shouldn't do that when you got your license?

Me: They never said anything about drifting through an intersection, I've even studied the state and city traffic laws, where is it outlined?

Cop: It just is. Don't do that again. (leaves)

It was a damn good drift too, he noticed it from 300m away!

This isn't the first time I was seen by a cop but the first time I've been stopped. The last cop that saw me gave me a thumbs-up.

I need to get someone to record a video of these drifts, I wonder how awesome I look. :D

yeah and what if you did hit some one!, it could have happened that same day it might happen next time you do it.

keep the drifting to the race track and video games. id be mighty ****ed off if you had hit my car while you were drifting.

it might not be outlined in the trafic laws but it friggin should be.

i wounder how awesome you would look in court after you have hit some one else.

lmao, be carefull man, you should get a cam and mount it (tape it) to your dash and record it someday. i'd really enjoy seeing it.

I want to mount a camera to the hood or bumper of my car. The lower to the ground and exposed to the environment the scarier the video will be.

I drift a 1990 325i like protomor.

we both do events in VA.

I tend not to try to drift in public for fears of accidents and cops.

I have been tempted to do it in the rain late at night (2~3AM)

that way there are less cops and traffic and lessens my chance

of getting in trouble.

I do admit though a situation like yours, Huezo, you got luckey.

I would like to slide a 5 series, but thats a lot of weight to toss around!!

I drift and do donuts at the mall parking lot whenever I get a chance. I haven't received any complaints so far, but then again my car looks identical to that of the owner of the mall.

These BMW vehicles just invite the driver to drift them, it all happens so naturally.

i've gotten approached because of drifting in a parking lot, the officer asked what i was doing and i explained that i was just practicing drifting and that the chances of me hitting anything were very slim (it was in winter at about 3 am in an empty parking lot. the officer just told me to be careful and then left

in the states, you can get a ticket for doing a burn out, or any time your tires break traction on purpose (i.e. sliding/drifitng). it would be exebition of speed.

i tried bribing a cop with 500 pesos before, i dont think he knew it was curancy.

If that was your dialog, you come off as being extremely arrogant to the police to me.

So, what model and variant 5 series do you have?

586853456[/snapback]

Yeah, I know. I would have been nicer but I was a bit annoyed/nervous because I got stopped for the first time.

Its a 525iA E39, the last revision with the angel eyes. Its a little difficult to get the power out of the 2.5L I6 in such a big car with an automatic transmission but its possible with the torque converter locked.

In Texas you can get a $80 citation for "excessive accerlation".

IE. if your tires sqeak at all, you can get a ticket. My friend has a cj-7 with big, off road tires. He rounded a corner going like 10, or slower, and the tires make a bit of noise and he got a ticket for it. It was funny.
