BUT tell me why i should but it over a pc? is it better than windows? i mean really? What programs run on it- can i run normal windows progs- and if not -is there some kind of emulator? I don't own a Mac, but I've used the older ones, and I think the new ones just look silly. Not to mention the computers themselves. That G4 (I believe) encased in glass, with all glass speakers was as tacky as they come. Gator Posted August 15, 2002 Share Posted August 15, 2002 #1 reason to buy a Mac is because of the OS. OS X is stable, beautiful, simple and easy, and isn't bogged down by any extras. What they say is true "It just works." On OS X I have Dreamweaver and Flash MX, Office X, and Photoshop 7. I used all of these on my PC. All 4 of these programs run better and even feel better designed on OS X. One thing I hate about these programs on XP is the "windows within windows", meaning there is a Photoshop application window and all of your Photoshop documents open in windows inside the main window. In OS X there is just your document window, which acts just like any other window. Feels a lot more simpler and it feels easier to get things done. I spent a lot of time, way too much time getting XP to look and function properly. Of course there is a lot of customizing to do with OS X to fit your personal preferences but as far as tweaking, drivers, hardware issues, and so on, there is no hassle with this. Your hardware and OS were built together to work seamlessly. Thats my blurb. For some reason, it takes me back to my childhood to when I was on the old Apple II computers playing number munchers, Oregan Trail, and Lego TC Logo or something. When I decided to buy a laptop, the idea of buying a boring looking Dell or anything with Windows XP just didn't excite me. So when I started looking at iBooks, I got all gitty. The idea of owning something new and different got me off. So I made my purchase, got the iBook a week later and now the PC hasn't been on since. :) bogd and I'm a college student. Thanks :china: Yes, you can run windows apps. with Virtual PC and there are a couple other programs which do the same. OSX is not really that much more stable than, say, WindowsXP. It really isn't. In fact, considering that not all the programs you use will be "Built of OSX", then it will be quite a bit more unstable. Especially running Virtual PC and programs made for OS9.x. My school has Director 8.5, and it crashes every computer, consistently, about ever 20 min. or so, all are OSX G4 systems. On my Dell Laptop with WindowsXP, my computer has crashed once since I've upgraded, and it was something I did to mess it up. I'm just saying this because some people are trying to say OSX is more stable, and that just isn't really true. WindowsXP is completely backwards compatible with ALL Windows programs without a seperate OS environment running on it, and it does not crash the programs. Now, I don't want people replying to this saying "well XP crashes, mine did, blah, blah". The fact is that XP and OSX are not much different in stability, but Windows PC's have a million different kinds of hardware and software runnin on them, compared to Apple computers, you're going to have hardware and software conflicts that just don't happen on a Mac, but that has nothign to do with the OS. And even Microsoft doesn't have enough power to change that... YET. You're looking for reasons to switch over, I'm just giving you some helpful advice. Neither is more stable. I do think OSX is a better OS though, but not because it is more stable, it's just not. The functionality of the OS itself is better, it looks great, and the user experience is better with OSX than with Windows, in my opinion (other than the OS9 environment crashing ALL THE TIME). In a year or so, that will be no problem with any widely-available software though. Plus, every program that is on both Mac and PC is better for the Mac (not including games). Adobe, Macromedia, even Microsoft products are better on OSX. And iTunes, the iPod, the SuperDrive, their amazing displays, iDVD, all superb programs. I use Final Cut Pro 2/3 a lot at school, and DAMN that program is fantastic, I'd take it over Premiere any day! I do not own a Mac, but I use one EVERY day, and they're great, if I had the $ I would buy one and so should you! haha. Besides it's always better to be fluent in more than one OS and I never owned a laptop so it wasn't like I was replacing anything. And if you look at the price of the ibook with the combo drive it's really not that much more than a portable DVD player so I think it was a good purchase. Say, if you want some video editing software, on the PC you have 1,000 titles to choose from, but they are all no good. There is only one piece of software for video editing on the PC worth buying and that's Adobe Premiere. On the Mac you only have about 2, there maybe more, pieces of video editing software and they happen to be the two that everyone wants...Adobe Premiere and Final Cut Pro. See, we have all the same software like on an PC, but we don't have to weed out the crap to get to the good stuff and not to forget that it probably will run a lot better on a Mac too cough cough Microsoft Office cough Adobe Premiere cough. The Video game thing always comes into the argument. You know, there is a lot more to a computer than just to play video games on it. And is owning a PC really cheaper? every year or so you have to buy a bigger hard drive, a bigger monitor, louder speakers, better video card, and faster processor to play your lovable video games. Funny you should mention video editing-- I find that iMovie is AMAZING for a free program, it certainly blows Windows Movie Maker out of the water, and Final Cut Pro 3 is wonderful! See it isn't all baout games in the first place, and about all the games onthe PC suck. Not all, but some. What can you on the pc that you can't do on the Mac? Tweaks....more games? OH well, it's your choice, but if i were you i owuld make the 'Switch'. No argument needed, it's really what you want, not what others say you know. I've been waiting almost 2 years to switch! :cool: I should be getting my iBook 700/20GB/Combo/128 within 2 days.... probably the best laptop that I'll have (certainly will beat my Dell Inspiron 4000... Reason I switched? OS X... possibly the best and most user friendly OS I've ever used and seen... Do you want to save space? Get the iMac. Do you want to be able to upgrade and have lots of components to add? Get a G4 tower. There is really no better deal in the laptop world than an iBook, PC or Mac. As far as desktops go, I am looking at getting a PowerMac in the next 6 months or so.
