OmniWeb vs Chimera... (mindless rant)

Recommended Posts

Well, I just tried OmniWeb 4.1 (don't know when it was released, but my eMac has been away for service for 3 weeks :p), and the table rendering has really been buffed up. Neowin works almost flawless with it now. If it had tabbed browsing, I think I would use it instead of Chimera, mostly because OmniWeb allows me to use GFXArtist.com (the site is based on (d)html layers). The only problem I have with Chimera is it's poor Flash rendering. But then again, the browser is still in it's beta stages.

What do you guys think about OW nowadays?

Sorry for the rant, but don't say I didn't warn you ;)

Omniweb is a great browser and if it had tabbed browsing I might use it a whole lot more. But Chimera is coming along amazingly and will one day probablly be THE browser for OS X.

Is tabbed browsing like copyrighted or something by the Mozilla/Chimera folks? I just don't know why all browsers don't have this feature. Using multiple windows is just horrible.

I've found that Omniweb is a dog for me in regards to rendering speed. Chimera ****es on it on my Mac. Omniweb is a very, very nice app though, beautifully made.

Omniweb 5 will have something "similar to tabbed browsing, but much better" according to one of the developers. Not out until next year though.

I'm an avid OmniWeb user. I've tried Chimera, but to me, Omniweb is much faster at rendering the pages. It seems to me that since Jaguar, Chimera has been dog slow.

I hate tabbed browsing. I gotta have the pages in different windows. With tabbed browsing, one wrong mouse click, your window (and all those tabs) are closed.

The monitor had been damaged since I got the eMac. I had a greenish-bluish field in a corner of the screen, and around three of the edges, plus quite heavy moire over the entire screen. Probably it took a hit somewhere along the run. The reason they had it for 3 weeks was because they had to "wait for parts" from Apple :ermm:

OmniWeb is not much slower than Chimera for me right now actually, so the biggest disadvantage is that it doens't have tabbed browsing (and of course, not being free). I guess I'll see how it comes out next year then :)

In the meantime I'll just use Chimera for everyday use, and pop open OmniWeb whenever I want to check out GFXArtist, or the Cisco CCNA curriculum (sp?) material (partly flash based).

the only browser installed on my mac is chimera. its ridiculously fast, i have grown to like the interface better than omniweb, and it is furiously worked on 5 days a week.

i was an OW fan, i even bought it. but it just doesnt live up to the pure speed and reliability of chimera. chimera has mozilla compliance, a completely native interface, and tabbed browsing.

if you take the time to get used to tabbed browsing and keep your mouse off the red button, you will wonder how you ever did without.

i cant wait til chimera is a little further along as far as options go. the day they support different link open options (new window, new tab) as a mouse click, i will buy a three or more button mouse.

Doubt it. More likely whoever worked on it didn't have sufficient credit with Apple. Meaning they had to arrange payment for said part(s) prior to shipping.

Yeah probably something like that. At least I didn't have to pay for it :)
