eMule server list - fails to update

Question

Hi,

I'm using the latest version of eMule Xtreme with XP Pro SP2 + NETGEAR DG384G router and use Outpost Firewall Pro as a software firewall.

I'm connecting fine to eMule network and downloads are working at good speeds but whenever I try to update the server list I receive the following errors:

18/03/2006 11:39:43: An error occurred connecting to the server, Error:12029

18/03/2006 11:39:43: Failed to download the server list from http://ed2k.2x4u.de/g0u6eogk/micro/server.met

I have port 50321 forwarded on my router and have configured eMule to use this port.

Here's the rest of my software firewall settings:

TCP

Outbound

Remote Port 1024-65535

Allow

UDP

Remote Host 127.0.0.* -> This allows for Loopback. Unsure if it is needed but I apply this to most p2p apps.

Can anyone tell me why I cannot update the server lists?

That used to happen to me a lot. It's either an eMule problem or the server's problem. I gave up on eMule. It used to be good for rare stuff but it became so slow and I was never getting any peers to upload so.

Did you even try to follow that address? it says 404. page isn't there. gone. missing. poof.

Got nothing to do with your firewall.

You'll be better off deleting all the stuff in your serverlist (I'm not kidding!) and add them manually.

There's a website that lists most of the "safe"* servers around. Someone else here might be able to help me remember the address... There might even be a discussion here somewhere. I'm just too lazy to search.

*RIAA, MPAA, and I think the FBI are known to run fake servers.

:D I didn't mean you. I was asking the poster. He could've tried following that link before he got to the trouble of listing his firewall settings here...

The server creates new links every 12 minutes or so which is why the link doesn't work NOW.

I fixed the problem by allowing HTTP.

As for server lists, why would I be worried about RIAA? You assume p2p is for illegal downloads.

Forgive me for assuming wrongly.

But hey, aside from the legality of the stuff that you (and I) download, I for once don't like the idea of connecting to a server that is only there to snoop. (It's like entering a changeroom with surveillance cameras in it. I'm not stealing any of the clothes, but neither am I comfortable being watched doing "legal" stuff in it) :)

Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to diss anyone. I'm actually glad that there are still people using the eDonkey/eMule network. It saddens me to see people leaving the network to something more "hip" like bittorrent and badmouthing our network. "Too slow, too many queues, too much uploading, etc"

I used eMule to get some piano music sheets that, admit it, are kinda hard to get elsewhere. I'm not worried about the RIAA, or even the MPAA (which has nothing to do with music sheets anyway). I just want people to have the knowledge that they are indeed snooping around in our beloved network.

An excerpt from the official eMule board:

All these servers are fake (Sonny Boy 1-8, Razorback 2.2-2.5, Gigaserver, ***y xxx girls, France PS2, France Porn Server, Proyect xxx, very fast FRANCE server, Pirate's Lair 1-6, www.***TEENSERVER.com)
In case any of you are interested..

Well, I use torrents a lot. However, I'm happy to say my current stats for upload vs download currently stand at 110GB upload vs 86Gb download.

Not the best ratio ever but at least it's a positive one.

I'm new to using eMule and I'm still not too sure about it - I've heard it;s disk i/o can kill hard drives quicker than a quick thing.

I mostly provide bandwidth for free/open source software who use .torrent and ed2k links for downloads.
