So... I got my Mac refresh at work.

I got a Dual 1ghz PowerMac g4 with a superdrive, 80gig HD, ATi video card....

It is owning me. This thing is so damn fast and pretty looking. Jaguar runs like a champ on this beast. Anyone else got the new PowerMac? :ninja:

You bas... I mean... Congratulations!

Those new ones are really nice. I hope I can afford a PM the next time I'm buying a computer (which will probably be when we have G6 and whatnot) :)

ive asked this question bout a trillion times, do dvds play well in osx? on my peecee, its pretty laggy..but then again i have an 8 mb integrated vid card...

and if i play a game on a mac (such as mac version of the sims) would it play good or would it be laggy?

If you are thinking about getting the dual 867mhz PowerMac, I would suggest saving the bit extra to jump to the dual 1Ghz. The reason I suggest this is easy. The system structure is different between the 867 and the 1Ghz system in such a way that there is a signifigant speed burst on the 1Ghz not only attributed to the faster processors, but also an overall faster bus speed. The 1Ghz definately has the best bang for the buck currently.

eMac's will play DVD's, however I have seen this happen a few times; I'm not sure if it's a design flaw or just a cheep design. Because on the all-in-one units (eMac/iMac) have only two drives in total, Apple only put one IDE port in there. This means that youe DVD player is playing on the same bus as the hard disk. If the hard disk is used for anything (downloading, etc) while the DVD is playing, the Hard disk will bet priority and your DVD could pause. And yes, I have definately seen problems when burning a CD and using the hard disk (playing music and burning a CD).

This is not the case on PowerMac's because you can put the DVD player on a seperate bus form the hard disks. Especially true on the new PowerMacs since they have four IDE spots.

On you PC, try making sure that your hard disk is on it's own IDE cable, your DVD player is on another, and your burner on it's own too (if possible). This will ensure that the hard disk won't interupt DVD playback, and then if you choose to do a disc to disc copy, there will be no problems too since no devices are sharing IDE cables. I suppose this rule works the same for Mac's too... It's not really a PC thing, just an issue in the way all computers are made... for now....

i hope that doesnt happen to me, i dont want to end up having wasted cd-rs cuz of it...im thinking of getting an emac (dunno how much ram i'll get) with an external 120 gig lacie hard drive (firewire) and possibly a lacie 48x12x48x cd-rw burner (firewire also but i think thats the speed)

im going to do some comparisons (speed/stability) in nov at the local mac store (a few hrs away tho :() and if the emac seems a lil slow for me (the 933 pmac seemed fast as heck when i played around on it), i'll try to get my dad to get me the dual 867 (if i like it), and then i could add on an internal 120 gig drive later on....

it is my personal opinion that the dual 867 is the ONLY machine that is really worth the money being charged. $1699 for a dualg4 is damn near a steal in my eyes. Add on the fact that the RAM is significantly cheaper for it and I'm sold. Bus speed Schmus speed. Its pretty obvious that the G4s are bottlenecked anyways and that the bus speeds are just a number. To me its really not worth the $400 difference. If you have the same exact specs, its still a $400 difference. Dual 867 would be the best bet for me and I wouldnt be able to justify the dual GHz. The Dual 1.25 maybe, because at least I'd be getting the top of the line.

i'll try getting it, even if i have to use my pc monitor for it...

i got G5orbust to try out the new dual 867 (he owns a 933) and he was saying that its well worth the money, and when i tried out a 933 this summer, i was amazed about how fast osx.1 was...im used to waiting for everything to take a min to load (for mac)

I have an eMac and I just want to say that I have not noticed any problems when burning CD's and playing music/surfing at the same time. When burning with CDRDAO, the buffer is att 93-100% at all times.

pretty good :p...since getting a powermac would only be like $100 CDN more than getting the emac (with stuff i want), im going to try getting a powermac again...but on the disscussion part of the apple website there seems to be lots of ppl p/oed at the sound of the fan...hopefully they fix it soon, but it wont be as loud as my old pc lol

Only wimps complain about noise ;)

I have two computers in my bedroom, both on 24/7. Doesn't bother me at all.

If you get the PM and you're worried about the noise, just buy one of those cooled, soundproof cabinets to put it in :)
