I think it is way too soon to even be thinking of such names. It would only be pure guesses.

It already has succeeded! :D

It won't be the Xbox 720 or Xbox 3

It'll be the Xbox: "something"

They chose "360" because it sounds similar to the PS3 (both with 3's)... they didn't want to have an Xbox 2, and Sony has a PS 3, get it? It would make MS sound inferior, even though the Xbox 2 would have been the same as the 360, it's all marketing :p

It depends, if there is a PS4 they are going to use an arbitrary number with 4 so they are not "behind" in the name. much like PS3 and Xbox 360.

Xbox: 4U

See what I did there? The "4" is so when PS4 comes out, it won't sound inferior. And the "U" is because it's YOUR OWN PERSONAL SUPER-COMPUTER!!!! LOL

<~ idiot

<snip> they chose the name 360 because it signifys the 360 degree nature of the xbox, not only encompassing single player, but media playback as well as online gaming therefore covering every aspect of digital lifestyle the whole 360 degrees.

Sony has the mentality of "oh just put an incremental number on the name and people will buy it because its playstation"

keep it civil please n thanks ;)

well that's not the only reason. What Matrix XII said was correct. Microsoft wants to level both products, consumer won't think Xbox is any inferior.

It was stated somewhere, PCGamer or some gaming website, can't recall. *EDIT*

Q: Why Xbox 360? Why didn't they call it Xbox 2?

A: As various Microsoft executives have noted, Xbox 2 is a fine name until you realize that Sony's next machine will be called the PlayStation 3, which sounds newer and more powerful. The Xbox 360 name was chosen to imply that the gamer is at the center of the Xbox experience.

Even Mr Paul here has that kind of idea behind the 360 name. [http://www.winsupersite.com/faq/xbox360.asp]

Actually, you're wrong...

Microsoft admitted in the beginning of the announcement of the name that it didnt want an Xbox 2 versus a Playstation 3 where the consumers might think "Oh, 3 is a bigger number, thus better"

xbox3 and xbox360? xbox3 sounds like a lesser version of 360. not a very good name, if anything, it will be a name, such as Nintendo ____ (wii)

Back on topic...

The name for the Xbox 360 was picked based on some of the following meanings:

Xbox 360 = PS3: marketing term for parents/grandparents/relatives/newbies that buys consoles based on a numbering sequence.

360 = revolution: Nintendo Revolution AKA Wii.

360 = full spin: entirely new hardware platform.

360 = circle: the user at the center of the gaming experience not the console.

360 = circle: the ?ring of light?

Well? take a good guess or ask the almighty Ken Kutaragi about what that means?

As for the name of the next Xbox I?m sure the marketing guys will try to avoid the use of numbers on its name for logi:sl reasons. :shifty:

Sony: Live in your world. Play in ours.

I can't see what's ambiguous or confusing about that. Undoubtedly, it suggests that Sony is creates a world within which you can play and enjoy. There's no need to ask Kutaragi what it means because it's inherently clear.
