Spartan_X
Project Sylph Update First details on Square Enix's new Xbox 360 shooter. June 28, 2006 - Great news for fans of Square Enix, Gamearts and Xbox 360. Project Sylph, a new Xbox 360 shooter first announced by Square Enix at a Microsoft press conference prior to E3, is in the works for a year 2006 Japanese release. The latest issue of Famitsu has first details. Project Sylph is indeed the next game in the Silpheed line of shooters. Although not officially labeled a sequel, the title promises to expand upon the classic Gamearts franchise. The game takes place far in the future, hundreds of years after humans have taken to the stars in space vessels and conquered the galaxy. Mankind has spread to two new planets, who are referred to as "Refugee Planets" and whose resources are used to feed the drying Earth. All is not well in this Earth centered system. A resistance plotting to split from the Earth forms, and on July 5, 2632, this group, called the Adan Freedom Commonwealth, makes an attack on the Earth army's Delta Savior battalion as it carries out training exercises on the planet of Revendolph. This act of war was ordered by Doris Egan, head of the Commonwealth, who demands that the Refugee Planets be given freedom. This is the beginning of what becomes known as the "100 Day War." You play as Katana Faraway, a member of the Earth forces stationed at Revendolph. Working with your long time buddy Elen Bellstein, you face off against the AFC forces. Project Sylph looks like it will offer an intense arcade-style shooting experience. The stages that have been revealed so far are set in space and feature scenes with over a thousand enemy ships, along with giant mother ships. All of this is presented like never before thanks to the power of Xbox 360. As you blast your way through the stages, an on-screen display provides you with information about your ship and your surroundings. The game displays a simple radar output, showing where your enemies are, and also shows gauges for shield and armor. The screen also provides details on your current formation; it appears that you fight along side at least two other ships. You'll be able to equip four weapons to your ship simultaneously: a nose weapon and three main weapons. As you clear stages and earn points, your weapons can be upgraded, resulting in a total of over 50 weapon types. Project Sylph promises to feature something for everyone. Outside of shooting, the game will include story and character elements, told through CG sequences. The shooting segments can be toned down for novice players with an easy mode which simplifies the controls. With Project Sylph having at last made its debut outside of Microsoft's pre-E3 press conference, we're hoping to start getting screenshots shortly. Stay stuned!
