3 Red lights of Doom

Recommended Posts

Well, Earlier on I just fired up my 360 and it froze up on the boot screen. Turned the console off and back on again and I was greeted with the fabled 3 red lights of doom.

After swearing at it for 5 minutes, I unplugged everything (hard disk, power, A/V) and plugged it all back together again.

After praying to the god of Xbox I turned it back on again, and for the past hour its been fine.

I now have one question... should I be worried about my 360?

Is the 360 known to randomly throw up the 3 red lights on occasions?

I have a core that I got at launch, I picked up the hard disk a few months later when I could get my hands on one. I think that the hard disk drive was not spinning up, and doing the whole unplug/reconnect thing woke it up.

What do you guys think... should I be worried?

:Update:

My 360 is now dead. It locked up at the dashboard, so I powered down, powered back up again and I got a black screen. Powered down, pulled the hard disk and powered back up again. Got to see the silver orb then it locked up. I am now looking at the 3 red lights again.

8 months and the 360 is dead. Not happy.

That sucks. If you didn't get an extended warranty, I hope it doesn't cost much to repair. It's weird how long some people have had their systems when they suddenly stop working.

I wish I had an Xbox 360.... on seconds thought maybe not, there isnt a KILLER title on it yet, well not until Halo 3 I suppose or maybe a next gen version of Pro Evo Soccer - the best football game in the World!!

sounds like something fried on the inside...when it initialy died did you notice any burning or pastic smells coming from within the xbox? also does your xbox usually stay at home or do you take it out to lan parties alot?

what about the video cable? did you make sure that it was connected good? that might be a different error, but it doesn't hurt to try. hopefully you bought it at a store you can exchange it at...

Thanks for the replies guys...

In response:

It?s not an overheating problem. When it initially locked up the 360 had literally just been turned on. I have the 360 standing vertically on a table and it?s got loads of space around it, so there is no air flow issues.

The second time it locked up/crashed was just after I finished watching a DvD.

The 360 is generally behaving oddly. When turning it on I either get 3 red lights, a black screen or it works for a while only to lockup.

With regards to returning it, I'll have to get in touch with the company. I bought it off of the internet and I'm not sure what their returns policy is towards hardware. I live in the UK so the console is covered for 12 months.

If I end up having to phone microsoft, its going to be something that I won't be looking forward too. Apparently you wait for a courier to turn up, then you wait 2 weeks then you get a refurbished console back again. I really don't want to be stiffed with a refurbished machine that?s already failed once because if its failed once, then it can fail again.

The way I am feeling at the moment, I just feel like throwing it away and selling the games, controllers, hard disk etc to other 360 owners. :(

I've had mine for a month already. So far, all is swell (except for those annoying freezes while playing Halo 2, forcing me to redo sometimes an hour or so of checkpoints :( ). I bought mine from Overstock.com for $340 for a premium, so I hope nothing goes wrong. I'll probably be getting that extended warranty. All of the horror stories are scaring me  .

When mine broke, it just starting freezing at random intervals (sometimes just once a week), then it began to freeze and give me the three red lights on occasion, and eventually it just wouldnt get beyond the xbox splash screen bit at the start. If you are out of your warranty i would get in touch with the store first, and maybe they might have a better exchange / replacement policy, otherwise its gonna have to be some grief with microsoft...

Do you have walmart in the UK? Or a best buy? Or some store with an easy return policy and dumb employees? Just swap em. Get burned and burn back.

Exactly what happened to mine. Definitely not overheating as it was left well out in the open and the UK PSUs don't seem to get hot at all so it's not that.

You'll be needing a replacement for sure.

Did you have a power outage recently, like, due to a storm?

It's just, the game shop near my area, their 360 started to spazz out and it had multiple red rings of death during the storm (the XBOX next to it was fine, however). Just wondering, that might of caused it.

No power outages or anything - The 360 was fine one day and totally dead the next.

I've heard back from the website I originally got the 360 from and they told me they can only accept returns within 35 days. They have told me to contact Microsoft.

I'll be doing that tomorrow now.

I'd be worried, very worried. Few survive the 3 red lights once it appears. I'd phone MS right away, or find out some way to insure it so you can get a new one. I have mine insured to the max so if/when it blows I'll have another one :D

They're up to revision 4 on the 360 now I've been told (by MS people), so the problems with 360's breaking will start to dwindle I believe.

I got the 3 red lights on my 360 last weekend, it refused to turn on for a few hours so I coudn't get my game out. Luckily after a few hours of stroking and pleading it turned on long enough for me to get the game out. I then promptly returned it to the shop for a exchange.

On to my third 360 now :/

Ouch, that's too bad. I feel sorry for all these people with troubles and I have had relatively none with mine.

I used it for a few hours over the weekend and 360 has been fine. I don't know if its worth phoning Microsoft still? I really don't know what to do now. :pinch:

Lol, I am on my third ps2, I just can't afford to let my games go.
