XBox networking problem

Recommended Posts

I personally had this problem with my XBox and also had it briefly with the 360. Now a friend of mine is having this problem. He updated the firmware on his router (DLink) and lost all his settings.

When using a wireless gaming adapter (mine was a linksys, his is a DLink) the adapter is programmed correctly with a laptop connected directly to it (it saw the wireless network and connected to it), but when it's plugged into the XBox, the XBox assigns it some strange IP (DHCP is enabled). The one thing I remember that was strange was that his subnet mask was set to 255.255.0.0. I'm not a super network admin, but I've never seen that subnet used. His IP was also nothing like "192.168.1.?"

I remember all the times I had this problem it just "magically" fixed itself and from searching around, others have had it fix itself also. My friend's isn't fixing itself, though so I was hoping I could get more direction.

For reference, we have WEP turned off and DHCP turned on, both on the adapter and on the XBox. I would prefer not going to a static IP. I did try putting a static IP on the XBox and it didn't work anyways, but I don't want to do it on the adapter (connecting the laptop to it again will be a pain).

Is the Xbox set to automatically get the nets setting or not ? Also I believe that is a valid subnet mask.

Yes, the XBox is set to DHCP. The subnet mask on the network is/was 255.255.255.0.

Tell him to check if the Xbox's mac adress is enabled on the network. Some ISP/Routers require you to add the machine's mac adress manually.

His network doesn't need that. Arrgh. It's so frustrating. There's NO answers out there. Thanks for the hwlp, though.
