RedHat 8.0 help!

2) Install kernel-source-2.4.18-14 from CD or download it from a Red Hat 8.0 mirror site, make sure you have the development packages installed, and follow the instructions here. That's the easiest way to enable NTFS support with Red Hat Linux 8.0. At least you won't have to recompile the whole kernel. ^^;

Redhat uses GRUB by default (instead of lilo), use the grub-install command followed by the device you want to install it on, eg

grub-install /dev/hda

If you want lilo then it's also available

alright, I got the ntfs.o thing fixed and I can mount ntfs drive as root. However, the problem now is that I can't access the mounted drives as a regular user (I tried the command that articles gives you) and I can't set it to mount at startup.

and.... /sbin/lilo doesn't install lilo! instead, it gives me an error that "lilo.conf" doesn't exist.

annnnddd...I was wondering if any of you could tell me how to get the mp3s working as well :ermm:

thanks!

To access the mounted drives use an entry in /etc/fstab like:

/dev/hda2 /mnt/windows/d ntfs noauto,user,uid=500,gid=500,umask=007 0 0

but where the uid=500,gid500 is you need to enter the values shown in the /etc/passwd file (become root to see this and view it, the values are next to the section in the file corresponding to the user you want to allow access).

also change the drive and path (/dev/hda2 and /mnt /windows) to the ones you need to use

I don't have lilo.conf and use grub as it's automatically installed on my system (have the same error as you if I type lilo)

See this page for mp3 support.

  • 4 weeks later...

I downloaded from usenet but the 2nd cd didn't checksum (used md5), used a mirror from redhat site and got a 2nd cd that checksumed, this was ages ago and I expect there will be a good copy now on usenet (try one of the various linux binary groups)

Dont forget to checksum tho before burning
