Denzel Washington to Take on Master Chief Role?

Our buddies from FilmForce reported last night a gossip piece from Dark Horizons that claims Denzel Washington will play the Master Chief role in the upcoming film adaptation of the popular Xbox game series.

The site did not cite a source for the rumor, which comes on the heels of the news reported earlier this month by the Associated Press that Washington had met with filmmaker Peter Jackson in New Zealand to discuss working together.

Jackson is exec producing Halo. The AP claimed that Washington would direct an unspecified project that Jackson's Weta special effects house would do the visual effects for.

We find hard to believe that an Oscar-winning actor with the prestige of Denzel Washington would play a role that has him inside the MJOLNIR armor throughout the entire film without showing his face. Plus, fans of the series would complain that Master Chief doesn't have the same voice as in the video games.

Considering that Sergeant Major Avery J. Johnson is a central character in the series and that both are Afro-Americans, we think it is possible that the role Denzel Washington might has been signed for the role of Sgt. Johnson and not Master Chief.

From the very beginning, we thought there were only two actors who should play Sgt. Johnson: Denzel Washington or Samuel L. Jackson. We won't accept another actor.

Who do you think should play Sgt. Johnson?

What from what I can read it says Denzel Washington is going to DIRECT, not ACT in that film. If you read what AP claimed.

Sgt. Johnson sure Samuel L. Jackson if he is up to it, he has done many bad films so he couldn't damage his reputation by acting in possible the first great Game>Movie adaption.

White people sound different to other white people, coloured to other coloured, i dont see why a "black" voice as master chief would be so outrageous. What you said could be taken the wrong way so i suggest you edit your post.

isnt Master Cheif white anyway? and would need a white mans voice to sound authentic....

why would ypu say something like that.

i'm black but i have been told that i sound "white" and if you wanted it to be that authentic just get the voice actor to play the part in the movie.

i honestly don't care who plays the part i just want them to make a good movie out of a great game.

has anyone seen the master chiefs face?

look i worded my words wrong, people know that Denzel Washington is black yes? so by them knowing hes in the film and acting as a white person (im 90% sure in the books it mentions "johns" skin being a pale white when he gets out of his suit as a child) it just wouldnt work.

God keep digging.

How do you "act" as a white person, is it something they teach in acting school, how to be a white person?........

They arent doing a direct book/game to film translation, theres a little thing called film adaptation where they take all the bits that would translate well on film, theres nothing to say masterchief should be "white"

I find what you say highly offensive.

I had before a web client that I designed and updated his site I told to him several times and his voice sound like a white educated man, I meet him and to my surprise he is black man, educated in Harvard university, yes sometimes who you think is someone when you realized you was wrong, so if denzel Washington want to play the role I don't mind, he have a high reputation in Hollywood

"act" as in playing the part of....its a film of the game series....it would be stupid to have Master Chief in the whole game and book series being white, then suddenly being dark skinned. im sorry if you took it offensivley, i didnt mean it that way, i worded it wrong and if you take offence then fine.

It doesn't really matter who plays Master Chief. They should just get the same voice actor who portrayed him in the games to do his voice. No one sees him anyway. He could really be green for all we care.

Does that mean nothing? Or do you just assume he is going to act because he is not known for directing? Famous actors direct movies all the time. And he has directed acceptable movie before and is scheduled to direct another movie for a 2008 release

What does it matter who plays him? I understand some people's desire to keep things canon as it were but this is Hollywood, there's no such thing as canon. You've got a Chinese girl playing a Geisha, batwoman a lesbian in a comic book, it's just how things are. Denzel's a good actor and if he's doing the part I'd consider that a plus. The only way that MS could actually win is if the voice actor for Halo does him, so even if they picked a different white guy it'd still be off. So if you're going to be off, why not be off with a great actor?

Anyways, it's not confirmed he's doing it and the rumor does make it look more like he's directing as opposed to acting in something so there's really no need to argue this.

Why would he be meeting Peter Jackson? I thought Jackson was just brought on so they could use his name when advertising it - I didn't think he'd have any worthwhile input into the production of the film.

All I can see is you "digging" looking for racist comments burried when he obviously isnt setting out to offend. Grow up, clearly his post was about the character master cheif in the book being portrayed as a white man and he thought it odd they would use a black man to play him in the movie and like it or not if what he read in the book is true then it is a major inconsistency in the Halo world. It's a pretty valid statement. Theres absolutly no need to be so touchy, his post wasnt at all racist and if your offended im sorry but thats a problem you have to deal with.

As for Danzel Washington playing Masterchif. I really dont mind, hes a good actor although just about anyone could probably do it depending on how they portray him. I've never seen him out of the suit and always had more of a feeling he was just some robotic like character than a human inside so if they went that angle and didnt worry about the human aspect then the suit will hide whoever is playing him anyway. If they do remove the suit then yes, it would be nice to have an actor that can act.

So I thought Peter jackson was directing this but am I wrong. Whats his role exactly if any? Is it just the company hes working at working at it or is he the producer or something?

Peter Jackson is Executive Producer. WETA Digital is a digital visual effects (like animation) company based in Wellington, New Zealand, an offshoot of the Weta Workshop physical effects (like explosions and stunts) company. Director Peter Jackson, Richard Taylor and others founded Weta Digital in 1993 to produce the digital special effects for Heavenly Creatures, working with just one computer on that film
