Radix
I wanna install Red Hat8 on my Xp partition of 10.5 gb- wich i have 7gb free space. How much space should allocate to linux and how much partitions should create. Plz give some advice
CZAR
leave the 7gb as "unallocated space" then let the Redhat setup make the partitions and format them for you,it's very simple that way
Radix
What are the min size requirements for a redhat8. How about dual booting. Will it keep my XP untouched? My XP is installed on the first partition... no problems with that??

Clone5k
3gb's should be enough The typical install takes up from 1300mb-1600mb or so. You'll also need some hard drive space for your swap file. 500mb or so should be good for a swap file size. You can make it smaller if you have lots of ram. MulletRobZ
Better still, get a second hard drive of at least 5 GB. That way, you won't have to worry about data loss once one of the hard drives go down. If it's the Windows, you can transfer the stuff to the Linux, even with NTFS. If Linux goes down, use Explore2FS to get the data from the Linux partition. It will work for the Journalized file systems as well. :)
CZAR
if you're just going to "experiment" with Redhat/linux when you install it don't use either bootloader(LILO or GRUB) instead choose no bootloader and at the end of the install it will ask you to make a boot disk, this way will leave XP as the main booting OS until you put the Redhat bootdisk in while booting. now i'm sure people will come in here touting how "easy" and "simple" both LILO and GRUB are but i've seen it can be a pain in the ass sometimes accessing your XP partition when using them. Chicane-UK Veteran Posted October 13, 2002 Veteran Share Posted October 13, 2002 Nope - working fine here! 15GB boot drive - Windows XP has been allocated an 8GB slice, Linux has been allocated a 5GB slice, and the swap partition has been allocated a 256MB slice. 3 partitions in all, and using the LILO installer that came with Red Hat.
