MySpace is Crap - a web developers view

Recommended Posts

A little history on what is MySpace for those of you who have been hiding under a rock or just have real jobs (joke). Or are over the age of 30 (another joke).

MySpace is a social networking website based in West Hollywood, California offering an interactive network of blogs, user profiles, groups, photos, MP3s, videos and an internal e-mail system. According to Alexa Internet, as of July 2006 it is the world's fourth most popular English-language website and the sixth most popular in any language. MySpace has 300 employees, is owned by Newscorp, and does not disclose revenues or profits. MySpace currently reports just over 95 million members, with 500,000 new members each week.

Oh how does MySpace suck? Let me count the ways.

Let’s start with this, I have been trying to log into my account for 4 days now without success. This site has got to have the WORST coding of any popular site I have ever use. 9 out of 10 time I have trouble just logging into the site. Why you cannot login each an every time, I haven't a clue. This seems to me to be one of the most critical pathways into the site.

Not that I am not doubting that this has been a great way to find many of my friends, both new and old, online. But have you tried to use a profile covered in the Spyware laden comet cursor? How about the java snow? Or the CSS that makes everything illegible? There are even warnings of home MySpace has some of the fastest spreading Spyware networks ever seen.

Really, that's just a lame excuse to bash MySpace. You know why you've had trouble the past 4 days? They got hit by the power outages in California.

Second, how can you judge user created pages as MySpace code? The individual members chose to add that snow effect or those obscenely bright colors.

Speed? It's arguably the most popular website on the net. Considering the amount of data they have to move, you'd expect issues.

Not only is it a code disaster, it looks HORRIBLE. Every site is so bad, its pathetic. Omg its like a compilation of the most annoying backgrounds, music, and videos put together with a orange font color and blue borders everywhere.

Oh yea Video Bad language

i must agree partly on the login part. it is very hard to login at times, and uploading new photos? forget that, there is always an internal error.

bangbang - You know, I live out here in Los Angeles, not too far from MySpace central - and our power has been fine. Besides if you site is worth a million dollars, how about investing in a generator or a good co-lo facility or even a backup server somewhere else. Come on.

In all fairness, when on Myspace you're rarely on something designed by Myspace, you're on different peoples HORRIBLE looking pages, it's like the return of satans GIF animations on every single one.

BUT someone did more then nag about it design :

AND not all is bad with Myspace, I made some (two) real good friends there, but my stay was short, one or two months and I happily deleted my user.

I know this is probably off topic but I think this is a cop out excuse for its "outages." You can't tell me that a site as huge and popular as myspace is doesn't have UPSes or generators for their data centers.

i think myspace is great tool, but only in the right hands like every tool is. the problem is that probably most of the page is being used by the wrong hands. most of the pages are crap. Some were soo bad thats its sometimes funny, unlegible fonts and backgrounds. super self centered megalomaniacs etc. me dont have myspace for many reasons/

If I remember reading right they did have backup power, but that failed too...

Cyco - but who allows all of the Horrible code to happen?

So you're going to bash Myspace for giving it's users free choice to customize they're spaces how the feel? Kinda stupid if you ask me

Myspace is worth much more then that. Also in business you make the most money you can with the least expenses. That's why myspace will have issues until they start losing money.

I have to agree with all points you have made.

All the cool people are doing it, so should I?

Still undecided on this one, help me guys give me an opinion please. I am unable to form my own opinion.

OK on a positive note. MySpace has let me find friend I would otherwise never have talked to again. The ability to find others, classmates, friends and such is unriveled. Even the music service is pretty cool. Over all there is a TON of opportunity for MySpace to be a truly great site instead of a flash in the pan. Right now, they are dropping the ball.

Yeah, I think that MySpace has everyone under their grips, but that is beside the point. Things happen, plus it is free, so you cannot really complain. It is not like you have invested mass amounts of money into their site, let alone your profile.

If you are that addicted to MySpace, I would think there is a problem. Don't get me wrong, it is cool, and I check it a couple of times a day, but it is just a website. If you feel like you need to make sure your friends have not knocked you out of their Top Friends every 6 seconds, or accept the girl porno bot friend request, I would say to find something else to do with your life other than complain about MySpace being down.

Everytime something becomes poplular or makes a lot of money, someone has to bash it to make them feel better about their computer skills, if any.

Get over it, if not, either that or make your own online community. It won't compare.

You also have to remember that all of those ugly designs are made by members or chosen by the members. It's not coded like that by the MySpace people, that's why it's called "My"Space .. not YourSpace or TheirSpace.

If you don't like the look of it then why the hell do you go to these sites, no one is forcing you to go to an ugly website. One more thing, not all of the sites are utter trash. Mine is just white background with black text. Couldn't be any simpler than that. Also my bands is almost the same as mine, except I put a little tiling background picture.

God I hate myspace. It looks terrible and everyone I know has one except me because I pwn.

I hate it too, I don't like it at all. I prefer Faceparty or sumthin else.

MySpace is a huge and its a great marketing site for artist and such, and to be honest, I don't like it.

It's too commercial for my liking.

MySpace is a great tool for communication, I have got back in touch with people I went to high school with and moved. And yes, I do not like all the people loading their pages with junk. It is tacky and takes forever to load, even on broadband. But I always take into consideration that this is how people express themselves, even if they are ignorant.

Now you can check out my page, it isn't anything special, but I really like it. It is pretty clean and I keep it that way.

I'm not really for the site. I dislike it because of the majority of users on it. But I must say, why do you people bother with it if you hate it so much?

Wah, wah, wah. Aside from a few of you, all I see is bitching. Wah.

One of my favorite movie quotes: "You don't like it, get the f**k outta here." No one forces you to use it, so either shut up about it or do something to help the situation.

They have nothing better to do than complain about things that have more potential and mean more than themselves. It is what keeps everyone alive.

I started before it got big and it was advertised on TV and what-not. I am starting to getting sick of it, and bored with it, but as I said before, it is a good way to communicate.

So I suppose it is something that you hate to love.

Irony?
