Mandrake 9.0 & Kde Issue

Recommended Posts

Usually about once per day (sometimes more), the screen will mess up, and it'll look like 24 frames of the screen (needless to say warped beyond usability to shut down).

I can Ctrl-Alt-Del to log out and then log back in, and it's fine ... does anybody know if this is a known issue with KDE ? If so, is there a way to fix it ?

[off-topic] I knew mezz would be here :p [/off-topic]

Sorry, I don't use KDE... How about your XF86Config(-4)? How much mb of ram do you have? Video card? Do you get any of error? Try to check in /var/log/XFree86.0.log to see if you are able to get more information such as detail of error and etc. There's many things of possible to your problem, so you will have to dig in your system harder.

I have visit Neowin for long time, only front page to read news. I have NO patience with the slowness, server is too busy and etc at each click of links. So, that's why I only visit to the front page. Right now, Neowin finally has the speed at this moment, but I will see how it goes later when Neowin gets more people.

That's what bugs me, mezz ... I don't get any "error"

I have 324 MB RAM, so that's not an issue, and 8 MB Video RAM (shared though).

When I was running Windows XP, it'd just reboot me at about the same pace that KDE screws up on me, maybe it's happening for the same reason. At least with Mandrake it just takes logging out and logging back in :woot:

I wasn't asking specifically for your help mezz (thought I am very grateful for your input!), I would like anybody's help if they may have an idea as to what might be causing this (which it seems is the video card, since it seems to be happening on two unrelated OS's)

Don't worry, I don't post because of your word. I just want to answer to your problem, even thought if you didn't say anything about me nor else.

My first guess would be related with your video card, since you have the problem on any of OS. You can buy a cheap video card if you don't play game or whatever. I would get myself a Matrox or ATI video card, they are very good video card for *nix. Nvidia can be nice when the driver works perfect, which there's no native driver for *BSDs. Do you have another video card? You can take out one of your computer and test on this computer if you have more than two computers.

Well, my computer has a good video card in it (motherboard is busted thanks to the wife), and I didn't really want to use my parts in this one, but it seems that I may have to if I want to test this theory.

Thanks for the input, mezz. Helpful as always :)
