F.E.A.R. announced for PS3

22 posts in this topic

PALM SPRINGS, California--The desert may not seem like the ideal place to make a major game announcement, but Sierra Entertainment did anyway. Entertaining journalists from various gaming media outlets, the Vivendi Games subsidiary held an event at the Parker Hotel in the triple-digit heat of the Palm Springs desert, and used the occasion to announce its first PlayStation 3 game.

F.E.A.R., the popular shooter from Monolith Productions (Condemned: Criminal Originals), is currently in development for Sony's next-gen console. This will be the third platform the series has spread to, following a previously announced Xbox 360 version, due in November, and the PC version, which was named Best Shooter of 2005 by GameSpot.

The game is being ported to the PS3 by Day 1 Studios, which is also working on the Xbox 360 version. What's more, would-be PS3 owners won't have to wait for F.E.A.R.--the game will be one of the system's launch titles when it debuts in the US on November 17.

In addition to the single- and multiplayer portions of the game, F.E.A.R. for the PS3 will also include exclusive content--though Sierra reps were not divulging any details.

The timing of the announcement may seem a bit unusual for fans of the series, as earlier this year the now Warner Bros. Interactive-owned-Monolith announced that a sequel to F.E.A.R. is already in the works for "multiple next-gen consoles," which almost certainly includes the PS3. The sequel will not be named F.E.A.R., however, since Vivendi owns the rights to the name.

Regardless of what the sequel is named, there will still be plenty of F.E.A.R. to go around this year. In addition to the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of the game, Sierra is releasing a PC expansion pack, F.E.A.R. Extraction Point. Today it also released F.E.A.R. Combat, the multiplayer portion of the PC game, for free download.

F.E.A.R. for the PS3 has not yet been rated or priced, but the Xbox 360 version will be $59.99 and is rated M for Mature. For more information, read GameSpot's review of the PC version on the game.

This is good to hear, but the screenshots look like crap. Hopefully they'll fix that by launch.

edit; Damn, forgot to mention in the title it's for launch.

Yeah I don't know what's up with those screenshots.. The textures look severely reduced in quality. Hopefully it's just a sign of early development.. I mean I know the 360 has more room for textures, but there shouldn't be "that" level of difference.

Anyway for cross platform? I would love to play people on PS3 from a 360.

That would be a no. That would require Sony and MS to tap into each other's online infrastructures, or have the same one. I don't see that happening any time soon.

As for those screenshots, they'll probably get a lot better by release time, but that may be the fallout of being harder to develop/port for. Microsoft is making a big push for ease of porting between Windows and 360, and I can't say Sony's doing the same thing for the PS3. Also, I wouldn't expect it to take full advantage yet anyways, especially since it's a launch title. It's not going to look like the greatest thing ever on PS3.

It's great that launch titles are suddenly being revealed.

Blazing Angels was also announced as a launch title from Ubisoft.

Considering F.E.A.R. is supposed to be a launch title and the PS3 devkits are final I seriously doubt they have room for lot of improvements before the november launch.

Unless the game is feature complete...then they have a couple of months to fine tune and optimise.

That's exactly the case with Full Auto 2 Battlelines...they've got quite a bit of time to optimise the game to the PS3's final hardware.

A serious question, for how long has this game been in development for the PS3?

One thing when porting games developers usually do it in higher quality low fps and then improve performance and frame rates. They usually don't start with low resolution textures and then increase them later.

It's been in the rumor mill for a while, but people expected it to come out with the expansion pack in spring, this was really a nice surprise. :D

Wow, the X360 version looks great. The PS3 screenshots look naff but none of them are in-game and so it's hard to compare - I can't imagine it will look that bad but if it does then that's bad news for gamers.

Its wierd, PS2 games look the same as well, soft and blurry. The 360 version isnt all that hot looking either, looks bland and uninteresting, although it is a lot sharper :p

The PS3 imagery has blurred images because of depth-of-field. There aren't any "in-game" screens for the PS3 yet for this so we'd have to wait to actually compare fairly. The PS3 version was only announced a short time ago as well.

I dont see anything depth of field there, the foreground is as blurry as the midground and background.

The X360 version looks as good as PC to me, though I wonder what the framerate is like. As for the PS3 version having better texture and shadows - that is just dellusional... by all means defend the PS3 when it is justified but you can't just make up nonsense like that. We need to see in-game screenshots and/or videos before anyone can make any fair comparison - however, what can be said with confidence is that the current PS3 screenshots we have look terrible and are more like a PS2 or Xbox game.
