Microsoft Denies HD-DVD Game Plans

A senior Microsoft employee has once again used an online weblog to clarify policy for the Xbox 360, with the company's John Porcaro stating officially that there will be no HD-DVD format games released for Microsoft's next-gen console this year.

Porcaro, communications manager at Microsoft?s global games marketing team, wrote on Gamerscore Blog that, ?I'm seeing lots of speculation about our upcoming HD DVD Player, and whether we have plans to publish HD DVD games. The answer is no.?

His comments were apparently in reference to the reporting of a Consumer Electronics Daily newsletter article, in which Microsoft Games Studios general manager Dave Luehmann is quoted as saying that the publisher has ruled out any HD DVD game titles for ?this holiday?, but with the suggestion that a decision post 2006 had not yet been taken.

Porcaro?s comments continued, ?Since announcing the Xbox 360 HD DVD Player accessory at E3 2006, we?ve been clear that it is designed exclusively for playing HD DVD movies. It will not play games on HD DVD.?

?At this point, we haven?t seen anything to suggest that next-gen DVD formats offer a better game experience than current DVD. What we do know is that these formats will bring added cost to game developers, disc manufacturing and could even result in added costs and longer load times for the consumer, which would negatively impact the game experience,? added Porcaro.

This announcement continues Microsoft's seemingly successful strategy of bolstering official press releases with weblog statements from senior Xbox 360 team members such as Larry 'Major Nelson' Hryb - as well as more personal opinions from figures such as Microsoft director of games platform strategy, Andre Vrignaud, who recently stepped up to describe 1080 pixel screen resolutions as ?meaningless?.

well if you knew all about hd-dvd in the first place you wouldn't have needed microsoft to respond in the first place. exact words i read in an interview with a spoksperson for HD-DVD alliance or w/e u call them

"With players likw Microsoft backing HD-DVD could we see games availible on HD-DVD?

Simple awnser, no. Reason why, our first gen disks are aimed specificly at data storage and HD movies. We may support games in the future but for first couple of generations it's highly unlikely"

dunno how many times i have to repeat this on hese message boards about hd-dvd

sony will have blu-ray HD supported games on ps3.

http://news.teamxbox.com/xbox/11573/HD-DVD...Rumor-Debunked/

Yesterday, several publications reported a Consumer Electronics Daily newsletter from Warren News in which Dave A. Luehmann, a general manager within Microsoft Game Studios, was quoted supposedly saying that ?Microsoft hasn't determined yet whether to do Xbox 360 games in blue-laser HD DVD?.

This was enough for several sites to report the rumor of Xbox 360 games coming in HD DVD format. Luckily, Microsoft reacted quite quickly to deny this irrational rumor.

"I'm seeing lots of speculation about our upcoming HD DVD Player, and whether we have plans to publish HD DVD games. The answer is no." ; John Porcaro, a Microsoft employee and member of the Xbox Global Marketing team, explained in the team?s Gamerscore blog.

Porcaro added: "Since announcing the Xbox 360 HD DVD Player accessory at E3 2006, it?s been clear that it is designed exclusively for playing HD DVD movies. It will not play games on HD DVD."

No one should have reported or believed this rumor in the first place since there is no point in making a game on HD DVD media for the Xbox 360; first because of the read and access times associated with HD DVD, and second because Xbox 360 can?t use the hard drive for caching. So not only HD DVD media would take longer to load than DVD media, which can be read at 12X on the Xbox 360, but the info couldn?t be pre-loaded on the hard drive.

But then: ?why is Sony using blue-laser media?? a smartass could ask. Well, first because Blu-ray Disc has higher transfer rates than HD DVD and second, because the PlayStation 3 can do pre-load caching since every PS3 comes with a hard drive.

Its not impossible, if the 360 had a hdd that it could cache to then it is possible but its highly unlikely they would alienate a lot of customers by creating games on HD-DVD.

I don't think it will alienate people. You just have to go buy the HDDVD drive.

Also if I'm not mistaken, I think there is also DVD/HDDVD hybrid discs, so they can put the extra stuff in the HDDVD layer.

<Edit>

I googled it.

Toshiba PDF

Wouldn't the hybrid disc be perfect for the 360?

It would alienate customers - you can't force a ~$200 device onto consumers so that they can play games on their games console.

It would be a serious error to start releasing games on HD-DVD. And developers won't do it because hardly anyone will have the addon...why would they take the risk?

For what? If they used the HD-DVD part for the game, they couldn't use the DVD part because there would be a reason why they didn't use DVD in the first place.

Back to Square One :)

Exactly.

If Microsoft did this you can bet a lot of 360 owners would tell them to shove it.

They're not doing it. How many threads/discussions do we really need on this topic?

I know they're not, I'm saying if they did...

I'm fed up of these threads too :/

Oh but they could . That'd be horrible, I wouldn't want to have to pay extra for an expensive drive when DVD's do just fine.

 I know what you're suggesting, but it's completely different. This is an optional addon...there is no way you could expect consumers to cough up extra one year after release.
