Does Mac's Support 5.1 Sound?

Recommended Posts

i dont think its possible to get 5.1 speakers to work on a mac, i think only 2.0/2.1 speakers are supported :(, there might be a usb 5.1 speaker set that works on mac..but i doubt it, creative does have a sound card for mac, but i dont think it supports osx

hopefully sooner or later apple will start supporting 5.1 speakers

it is indeed possible to get 5.1 on a mac. Only thing is you need to get an external device like a m-audio sonica external decoder which supports dts, dolby digital ac3 and dolby pro to act as a gobetween since macs dont actually have soundcards, its all pumped out via usb. You just plug it into a usb port and then hook your speakers up to that.

It's a pretty good deal really considering the fact I was able to get one for ?60.

So let me get this straight... I get a Sonica, any 5.1 speakers (PC- cheap Home theather-expensive) and VLC and then I can watch movies in 5.1 surround (DTS not yet supported). Or do I have to get a Sonica, a 5.1 receiver, speakers and VLC ??

if they have 2 speaker plugins (or whatver theyre called) on the speaker cables on the speakers...u will have to get something in order for them to work on the sonica..if they just have one plug or whatever theyre called for sound, then it should plug into the sonica fine i believe...and it will get 5.1 sound from there..

I think you mean RCA plugs versus the 1/8" mini plug. So if I buy computer speakers, like Logitech or Creative, the Sonica will handle the decoding of the 5.1 channels...therefore, Sonica is the receiver/soundcard? How does Sonica handle music?
