Imac Problems

Recommended Posts

Ok - I am a PC freak. I have a sweet system at home that my wife uses. She is a teacher, so of course her shool has these iMacs. She was up for review, and had a tech guy film her teaching and then burn it to CD. When she goes in to show her supervisor the video she can't figure out how to open the CD tray . . . on an iMAC! She tells me "I looked for a button, and Larry was hitting the thing, but I could not open the CD tray!" So I tell her I dunno, Macs suck.

In any event, she gets scolded by "Larry" her supervisor for wasting his time. She calls a tech guy and asks "How do I put in a CD?" Apparently she had to Log in, open some window, and drag the CD to the trash can! Now I have not used a Mac in years, but I do remember the trash was used to eject disks and I thought it was a completely inefficent way to insert and remove media.

So the upshot is that on a iMac to open the CD tray you have to go through all these steps. I am sold on iMacs now! Thats sooooooo much easier than using the "open" button on the face of a CD-ROM on a PC!!!

Regardless of wrather or not the cd tray ejection system on macs is "easier" or "less easy" than that of a PC is beside the point. It seeems as though your mad at macs because your wife couldn't use one correctly and failed a job interview. If this is the case, than it's your wife's own fault for not being adept enough in a system that is used throughout mose educational institutes. Moreover, dragging an icon to the trash bin, or highlighting an object and hitting the eject button isn't rocket science!

I'm not familiar with the iMacs, but on my iBook, there is a nice little eject key on the keyboard in conjunction with F12, I suspect such is the case with the iMac. Regardless, the trash bin ejection method isn't so difficult or ill thought of.

Every recent Mac I've seen has a key on the upper-right with a big 'Eject' symbol on it, right next to the speaker ones. Which *is* easier to use than the eject button on the case, since you don't have to take your hand off the keyboard to eject the disk. Sorry, this is a stupid thread, and I don't understand why you are blaming Apple and iMac's because you and your wife were clueless. I really hope she wasn't teaching a computer lab...although it wouldn't surprise me.

Before I go on a rampage defending my wife I wish to Now, say thanks for informing me that there is an eject key in the upper right hand corner. :D

Calling my wife names and insinuating that she lacks iuntelligence is totally uncalled for

Defense of my wife:

It seeems as though your mad at macs because your wife couldn't use one correctly and failed a job interview.
alright a$$ - first if you actually read my post, you will see that this was a "review" and not an interview . . . now that we have the literacy requirement out of the way. . . I feel no need for you to personally bash my wife. I think her masters degree and various academic and educational awards are enough to establish that she is not retarted.

Second, Please note that "Larry" her supervisor was hitting the iMac to get the tray open, and this was *his* computer.

Third, my whole point is that the iMac is not an efficient system to use. Its controls are not intuitive. It is beyond 'cute' for Apple to require multiple keystrokes to insert a CD.

Well I am blaming Macs because they are unintuitive systems. I think there is technology on Macs which is sweet - no argument there - but the use is totally unintuitive! Personally I thought someone would be decent enough to give me an reasonable answer without bashing my wife. And next, I was at Finally, my wife is a 3rd grade teacher. There is a tech specialist who takes her kids in to a computer room to teach computers. She does all of her grading, etc on our home computer becasue she hates the iMac at work.

Macs makers have trouble making cd roms i guess... I finally thought they got an original when I saw the B&W and other G4 towers. I got to use on and I push this really cool looking button on this really neat looking case... and out pops the same DVD-ROM I have in my PC behind the slot...

Although, I dunno what was with the no floppy eject back in the days... now they just trashed the floppy!!! What if I didn't have a network, and I needed to transfer a word document from one computer to another? Apple's solution: burn it on a CD!

Indeed...thats why I didn't!

Alright a$$, if you read my post you would see that statement was conditional...

Trying to find where she was called a retard...Oh, she wasn't, okay...didn't think so

Trying to find the "bash"....Oh, isn't there...didn't think so

Larry = teh 'tard :laugh:

Umm, it requires one keystroke, the F12 key :p So I guess this means your whole point is mut

Personal opinion indeed. I'm very fluent with PC's and macs alike. I am a computer science major, and have been using PC's for YEARS on end. I recently bought an iBook because of it's UNIX base, which is hella nice for developers such as myself. After a very short time, I realised that my mac was the most intuitive OS I had ever used. It runs like a dream. I will never buy a PC again. Switcher all the way.

So you see, personal opinion.

Oh, btw, perhaps your wife should attend a couple of those computer classes that her students are taken to. Before you get all red and huffy, I'm saying this not as an insult, but as a suggestion. Macs are widly used in the educational market. Learning the most basic use of them would probably not be a bad idea.

.....this one is indeed an interesting thread.

First off, how's it going Azazel!!!

Secondly, every OS has a learning curve.....Mac's included. I speak from experience because I used a Mac for years. I do remember dragging the CD to the trash bin in order to eject it. That, or if I'm not mistaken, there is an "eject" command in the finder/apple menu thingy. Anyway, I think it's great that they added a manual eject on the computer itself.

Maybe it's just me but I would have gone to the help menu and entered, "eject a CD."

ive been using macs for years...they keep getting easier and easier to use, i remember back when macs were still beige and had a cd rom drive similar to a pc (had a button on the computer to eject/insert cd tray drive)..but as soon as imac came out in 98, apple tried to make it easier and easier since...

yeah, im sorry but the imac isnt the one with the problem.

Ways to eject a cd from a macintosh based computer:

1. Hit eject key

2. Hold down f12

3. Hold down mouse buttons on computer reboot

4. drag cd to trash

5. click finder, go to file, click eject

6. open itunes, go to file, click eject

I hate to think what your wife would have done if this was a pc with a "stuck" cd eject button.

Hi [LOF]skinnylegs! :)

As far as the iMac not being an intuative system...um...lets see. I had used a Mac for all of about 20 seconds before I actually looked at the keyboard and noticed the speaker keys and the eject button. I tapped them, saw what they did. The 'Eject' key actually *gasp* ejected the cd tray! Holy jesus, what a concept. I did not beat on the thing, nor slap the side of it like an ape. Call me crazy, but if I don't know how to work something, I don't blame the object in question, I make the effort to learn how it works. This would be just as stupid as you starting a thread complaining about having a manual transmission car, since your wife only knew how to drive a freakin' automatic. How "unintuative" it is, and how much crappier manual cars are, and then go on about how she and her boss were beating on the dash and the stickshift. Uh...wow. So that's what a Masters Degree will get me, eh? Great! So right off the bat, I know more than someone with a Masters. Cool!

Btw genius, it's "retarded", not "retarted". I never thought she was. I do, however, have my doubts about you.

 Same here. First time I used an eMac I spotted it right off the bat.

Insulting him or his wife is totally uncalled for, let's not turn this into a flame war...

iMacs aren't as easy to use as apple says they are, it's like some people say linux is easy, but I would love to see a Mac user configure linux as a first time user. The one easy to use comp is the PC externally, one button to eject cd-roms as well as floppys, can't beat that

If you say so.

Mighty strange that I managed to figure out how to eject it in about 20 seconds if it's so unintuative. But hey, whatever. I guess there are some "special" people out there.

but I would love to see a Mac user configure linux as a first time user. The one easy to use comp is the PC externally, one button to eject cd-roms as well as floppys, can't beat that

I'd like to see a *Windows* user configure linux as a first time user. Hell, I'd like to see anyone configure linux as a first time user. Anything you do for the first time is difficult, unless you take the time to learn about it. Which these people blatantly did not. Don't start a thread complaining about something that you won't even bother to put the effort into *attempting* to figure out. Common sense.
