Nvidia Shoots For Film With New Chip

I saw this at this CNET News.com article.

NVIDIA is officially unveiling their new chip, the GeForce FX, originally code-named NV30, just before the Comdex Fall 2002 show starts in Las Vegas. Shipping in January, the new chip will show a significant increase in performance over existing chips in the graphics market thanks to higher clock speeds and a greater programmability than its predecessor.

The new chip can render graphics as much as four times better than NVIDIA's current flagship, the GeForce 4 Ti 4600. The new chip will run at a speedy 500 MHz, a 175 MHz increase over the GF 4 Ti 4600. A new feature on the chip will allow developers to program their own shaders, which are what give computer graphics their unique look. Using NVIDIA's CG language, for example, developers can make things such as skin look more like something you could touch.

The new chip from NVIDIA should outperform it's rival's best chip the ATI Radeon 9700 Pro, the current cream of the crop, by 25 to 50 percent in speed. However, is it too little too late for NVIDIA? ATI released their chip to the graphics card market last July. The ATI chip received many accolades, from both gamers and developers. The GeForce FX, which had been originally scheduled for release in August, was pushed back because of production delays due to the new chip using a newer, 130-nanometer (0.13 micron) manufacturing process. Some analysts are saying it will be hard for NVIDIA to take back its former glory from ATI.

The first two versions of the new chip, the GeForce FX 5800 and 5800 Ultra are in production. They will be available in January and will be priced between $399 and $499 at retail.
