Weasel
K I just got done installing redhat (works great from what I can tell), and I already screwed something up...I set the color setting too high (to 24 bit) and now X refuses to start (no valid screens found or some such message). Can someone give me instructions on how to find my way into whatever config file I need to get into and change it back to 16 bit color so X will start again?
Vlad
Yup. Open up the file /etc/X11/XF86Config (if it's not there, just type locate XF86Config...you have one, I just don't know where redhat saves it to). In the screen section, change (if it's not already) "DefaultDepth 24" to "DefaultDepth 16" (no quotes!). Scroll down a bit more and you should see a number of subsections with different resolutions/depth/viewports. Just change all the Depth fields to 16. Try running the xserver again (startx). If it still gives you problems, post your /var/log/XFree86.0.log (something along those lines) file.
