Phoenix Ported To Osx

Experimental build of Phoenix for Mac

This is a build of Phoenix 0.4 for Mac OS X 10.2. Please do not file bugs in Bugzilla based on this build. It is *not* an official Mozilla.org product. In this build I've restored some of the Mac-specific menu options but it is still very rough. It requires Mac OS X 10.2 but I've heard that some people can run it on 10.1.5. Read the enclosed README file for more info.

I know the app bundle contains some things that it shouldn't like Chatzilla, etc. If anyone can offer advice on how to package only the necessary bits for Phoenix, I'd appreciate it. Also, I was thinking it would be neat to implement the sidebar as a Drawer, though I'm no Carbon developer.

i cant wait to get my mac in a week :), one of the only things i was going to miss bout this puter was that i was going to miss phoenix...but since the person who created the pinstripe theme ported phoenix to mac...no more missing this pc :D..lol

can someone try it out and post screenies?

i'll post screenies that i found...

I thought Chimera was basically Phoenix for Mac... :o

i thought so too since the creator of chimera (david hyatt) is one of the head developers for phoenix, but i guess phoenix has more customibility than chimera and phoenix seems to be more user friendly (even tho theres no installer) than mozilla...hmm

i got a friend to try installing it, but it crashed as soon as it tried loading up...

no comparison between the two. phoenix is neat and all.... but i's no chimera. i don't want to see another hacked XUL or whatever program for a web browser. chimera is fast, and its native... oh yes, and its cocca :D

Cocoa is not always the best. In many ways, Cocoa apps tax your system more than Carbon apps do. So I consider Carbon apps the faster ones. But the last I checked, the Chimera ui was done in Carbon.

From http://www.mozilla.org/projects/chimera/

Chimera is a browser for Mac OS X that has a Cocoa user interface, and embeds the Gecko layout engine. It is intended to be a simple, small and fast browser for Mac OS X.

And Cocoa apps, when programmed correctly, are inherently faster than carbon apps. Mostly becuase the Carbon API tends to be more closely linked to the UI.

Cocoa (which evolved from OpenStep, which evloved from NeXTSTEP) is basically a set of libaries and tools that allow the programmer more flexiblity over the aqua window server, which was also derived from the NeXT window server.

I've seen some really bad Cocoa apps, and some very speedy carbon apps, but IIRC cocoa is the way that OS X is heading, so hopefully we'll start to see some better coded cocoa apps.
