VideoLAN is an excellent multimedia player with it's own plugins for playing different formats, so it doesn't need any codecs to be installed. It works great for previewing partially downloaded files too as well as DVDs, VCDs, and various streaming protocols. It can also be used as a server to stream in unicast or multicast in IPv4 or IPv6 on a high-bandwidth network.

Changes between 0.8.5 and 0.8.6-test2:

Playlist:

* Shoutcast TV listings support

Input:

* Support for RTSP authentication

* Support for adding subtitles on the fly

* Fixed MPEG-PS duration calculation

* ATSC support for DVB

* Partial support for DVR-ms recordings

* Partial support for MXF fileformat

* Improved support for Flash Video files

Decoders:

* Native WMV3 / VC-1 support

* WMA Speech support (through binary codecs)

* VP5/VP6 - Flash Video support

* The True Audio Lossless codec support

* WavPack support

* Improved H.264 support (interlaced, speed improvements etc)

* Fixed a problem with MPEG2 field pictures

* Fixed swapped colors on DVB subtitles

Video output:

* Additional OpenGL effects (cylinder, torus, sphere, ...)

* Improved libcaca support

Interfaces:

* All

* New hotkeys for crop and zoom

* Support for snapshots from the HTTP interface

* Windows

* Systray support in skins

* OS X

* Support for Apple Remote control

* Fullscreen controller panel (artwork by Simon Damkj?r Andersen)

* New playmode buttons (artwork by Simon Damkj?r Andersen)

Windows port:

* Support for Unicode filenames (Windows NT and above)

* Fixed IPv6 support on the client side

too bad video lan doesn't support rmvb files then it'll be perfect. Thanks for the heads up. I might install it.

* VP5/VP6 - Flash Video support

* The True Audio Lossless codec support

* WavPack support

Now VP62.avi and VP62.flv (i.e. FLV4) really play, finally. They didn't play with 086test1. VP5, VP61, and FLV5 (VP62+Alpha) don't play either, so maybe the could have said "VP62/FLV4" instead of "VP5/VP6". TTA doesn't play. WavPack neither. WavPack Lossless/Hybrid/Lossy.... none plays. Though the 'what's new' list is long, they still have some work to do, I guess. So currently, maybe ffmpeg/mplayer = slightly better? But I like VLC! :)

They still haven't integrated the Direct3D output module (required for smooth playback on Vista)!

Test2 said "WavPack support" but now NEWS.txt coming with Test 2a doesn't have this "WavPack support" support thing. Pity, even though it didn't work anyway in Test2.
