PS3 for a PC

The crazy kids at PC Gamer magazine pulled a stunt at the Sony Metreon on Thursday night, the evening of the PlayStation 3 launch. Their gimmick? They offered the first several kids in line, the guys who?d been waiting for 40+ hours to get their hands on a PlayStation 3, the opportunity to enter a drawing to take home, that evening, a high-end gaming PC from Falcon Northwest and a 30? LCD monitor (combined total value of $7,500), if the lucky winner would be willing to sign a legal, notorized contract stating that they would not purchase a PS3, nor have someone purchase one for them, nor accept one as a gift, for no less than 3 years. Basically, whoever won the drawing would be giving up the chance to own a PS3 to own a gaming system that blows the capabilities of a PlayStation 3 out of the water. Can you guess what happened?

See for yourself. PC Gamer posted the video podcast of the event, and there are pictures here. For more details and specifics on the contract, look here. I love stunts like this ? sure, it?s a no-brainer to say no to buying a $600 system so that you can take home a $7,500 system, but what excites me about this is that they actually got a ton of pickup, and that just brings more media attention to Windows gaming, which is definitely not a bad thing.

Neal, you made the right choice to sign that contract. I'll be sending PC Gamer some Games for Windows titles and a copy of Windows Vista (once it launches) for you to run on your new rig. Congrats&Source:rce: Gamerscore Blog

well i'm sure there are ways around this "contract" of his

1) someone buy a ps3.... and he steals it

2) someone buys a ps3.... buries it, and he somehow finds it

3) he wins a ps3 as a prize (but i'm not sure if prizes are considered "gifts".. i'm pretty sure not)

either way tho, 3 years is pretty intense

Read the contract ...

Legally speaking, there is a spelling error, that could be a loop hole... (see Paragraph 2)

Gamer hereby to pay Falcon Northwest the sum of $7,500

That does not say "agrees" or any thing like that ... he COULD take them to court and show this contract, and say, I didn't agree to pay them, nor did I disagree not to. This contact is null-and-void, by reason of Misspelling.

At least, it looks that way to me.

The contract doesn't say that he could help his friend out with rent for a while ($600) and because his friend bought a PS3 and his friend is kind enough to let him borrow it forever. :p

Or he could give 600 dollars to a friend or family member, they buy the PS3 and have it at their house and he can come over and play it whenever he wants, doesn't say in the contract that he can't use a friends or a family members PS3 :p

And why does it have to say "agree"? It says "gamer to pay." By signing the contract he's agreeing to pay -- it doesn't have to say "agree" -- a contract is a written agreement to begin with.

How would they know if he buys a PS3 without them knowing.

Hahaha, that is a brilliant statement. I think it would be better to say "How would they know if he buys a PS3 secretly?".

(Obviously if he manages to buy a PC without them knowing then they don't know about it. Thats like saying I won't get caught speeding if I don't get caught speeding.)

3 years is a long time to miss out on all those PS3 games!

But by that time a decent amount of exclusives would have come out and it'd be a more affordable price :p

win/win sitch, no?

would LOVE to have that PC.

But yeah my question is, what if he has brothers/sisters who live in the same house? Or what about if he has kids? Can they own a PS3?
