Dell Inspiron 6000 SD Card Reader

Recommended Posts

I recently purchased a Dell Inspiron 6000 from a friend, and installed Windows Vista RTM. Everything worked flawlessly except the SD card reader. I've tried to poke around and google all that I possibly could before posting this. I'm unable to utilize the SD reader and I can't figure out why.

Although they speak of working out of linux, as listed on this website, the SD reader is of Ricoh brand. Additionally, it mentions Secure Digital Host Controller Interface driver.

While searching on the keywords Secure Digital Host Controller Vista, I see listed right here on Microsoft's website, it says:

SD is supported natively in Windows Vista, Microsoft Windows 2000, Microsoft Windows XP, and Windows CE 5.0.

That means (to me), you should be able to use an SD card without ever installing/changing drivers.

I've taken screen captures of exactly what I have going on if it helps.

run file, when finished extracting DONT push ok.

in device mgr right click on device click update driver point to c:\dell (include subdirectories)

will probally prompt you if you want to install anyway click yes.

worked like a treat for me!

(end task in task mgr for the r105921.exe)

You know what? That's a very good suggestion, and in the time since writing the original message, I tried that myself. Somewhere in my searching I read that the SD card reader was part of the chipset, which is why a driver wasn't listed separately on Dell's page. Unfortunately, I didn't have the success you did. I've tried this method in two different ways.

Update Driver Software > Browse my computer for driver software > Search for driver software in this location: "C:\Dell", and I get the following:

already_installed.jpg

Update Driver Software > Browse my computer for driver software > Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer > Have Disk... > C:\Dell\Drivers\R105921\MMC\Rimmotsk.inf, and I get the following:

Are you referring to the same file that ZalmanLeib mentioned? Basically the chipset drivers? I have tried to run that installer as well with no success.

Edit:

I did try to run the setup again, this time noticing it says it's for a Ricoh R5C8xx. I searched using the keywords "Ricoh R5C8xx Vista Driver" and came across this Italian site which appears to have a driver for RC1/RC2. Of course it also appears it's for an Asus motherboard, just my guess anyway.

At any rate, I've tried this using the included installer and it STILL DOESN'T WORK.

I've opened the file Rimmptsk.inf file located in the \MMC\ folder, and it states:

; Windows VISTA Beta installation file

; for installing RICOH SD/MMC (Multi Media Card) driver

; The driver supports R5C823/843 RICOH Controller

Ignoring the Dell driver, and trying all of the methods I've mentioned above (with screenshots), I've tried to install using this beta driver. It's as if Vista totally ignores it and continues to use the built-in Microsoft driver.

I'm getting pretty annoyed that I can't get this operational.

Edit:

I found another download through my previous search. It appears this is an XP driver for the Ricoh R5C841/842 reader. I ran the included installer, and what do ya know? It actually reads the damn card now. :o

One thing I have noticed (prior to the suggested reboot)... I took existing SD card that contains photos taken from my HP digital camera and inserted it. But it prompts me to format it before I can use it in Windows. This doesn't seem right to me. I was initially worried that it may be corrupt. I checked it with a USB-attached memory card reader and everything still exists on the card.

So maybe it's not entirely solved yet if it doesn't even read the card properly. Ideas?

first of all,

MS has confirmed it to be a problem (with an interesting excuse)

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927835/en-us

it's about a different model, but at least you know why you are getting grief.

second,

look here there are other drivers you might want to try other than the 105921.

http://search.dell.com/results.aspx?s=gen&...sup&k=ricoh

hope this helps

third,

did you try Windows Update?

it seemed to have helped someone in the dell forum.

Thanks for the info from Microsoft's website, I wasn't aware they had anything posted about it.

I'll give some other drivers a try tonight and post on what happens. Thanks for the link.

Also, I am activated and have done all updates. This hasn't helped.

After installing the E1003075.exe drivers I still could not access some of my SD cards but now I had the "Ricoh SD Host Controller" under "IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers" in Device Manager so I did a little research. I found that the Hardware Ids refer to the device as "PCI\VEN_1180&DEV_0822" which can be viewed by right clicking on "Ricoh SD Host Controller" then Properties | Details | Hardware Ids (from drop down menu). I also noticed that the R105921.EXE from Dell's website has the Rimmptsk.inf file referring to the device R5C822 (the Dell Inspiron 6000 Ricoh SD Card Reader) but had wrong Hardware Ids so I changed the Ids under "[Ricoh]" to reflect what the "Ricoh SD Host Controller" was. So simply changing the "43" of the Hardware Id to a "22" in the Rimmptsk.inf file and then updating the drivers fixed my SD problems.

The link to the E1003075.exe file is no longer working. However, I happen to find the correct SD Card Reader driver for the Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop. Try this link:

http://www.fmworld.net/download/E1005249/E1005249.exe

Run the E1005249.exe file to extract the files to the \ricohmemory_vst32\ folder, locate the Risdptsk.inf file from the \ricohmemory_vst32\SD\ folder and use this file to install version 6.02.00.08 of the SD Card Reader drivers dated 12/20/2006. Unlike the E1003075.exe and R105921.exe packages, the E1005249.exe file has newer SD Card reader drivers and should support hardware ID no. of "PCI\VEN_1180&DEV_0822"; no need to modify the INF file. These drivers are actually for Win2000/XP/Vista. Better yet, run the setup.exe file from the \ricohmemory_vst32\ folder to automatically install & update your card reader drivers on the Inspiron 6000 laptop and restart the computer for the updated drivers to take effect.

Hope this helps!

And if you are installing the Ricoh Card Reader driver files from E1005249.exe onto a Windows XP SP2 machine, install the KB934428 hotfix to read "large capacity" SD Cards that are at least 4 Gb or upgrade to Windows XP Service Pack 3.

If some SD Cards are not properly recognized after installing the KB934428 XP hotfix, ask me for the KB946629 hotfix or just upgrade to XP SP3.

Sorry to bump an old topic, but would anyone be able to provide me a link to the E1005249.exe file?

the_guy

drat. the E1005249.exe file is no longer available on the FMWorld.net site. However I've found another package that

has compatible Ricoh SD Card Reader drivers that work for the Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop. Get them from the E1007029.exe file:

forgot to mention, double-click on the E1007029.exe file to extract the files and go to the \ricohmemory_xp\ folder and run the setup.exe file to install the Ricoh card reader drivers.
