DrunkenMaster
Just and FYI: I'd be very carefull if you haven't installed the ATI drvier for linux yet, to choose a x driver from xfree86config you think is close enough to the 9700. In some cases the refresh rates and RAMDAC timings can be very different from one care to the next. Choose generic SVGA driver for testing purposes. It could reck you video card if you're not careful. Now if you want OpenGL acceleration and take advantage of the 9700, you might want to check out xigraphics.com . They make accelerated Xwindows. Its smaller, faster and better supports the video cards.

makmak
try # lsmod And see if the driver module is loaded or not. Module Size Used by Tainted: PF sg 29476 0 (autoclean) sr_mod 13912 2 (autoclean) sb 8960 1 (autoclean) ---->AWE32 sb_lib 39424 0 (autoclean) [sb] uart401 7712 0 (autoclean) [sb_lib] NVdriver 1149248 10 (autoclean) ----->Nvidia driver(latest) vmnet 21600 6 ----->vmware parport_pc 15012 0 (unused) ----->parallel port parport 22560 0 [parport_pc] vmmon 22356 0 (unused) 8139too 15392 1 ------>rtl8139 nic mii 1980 0 [8139too] ide-scsi 9184 1 rtc 7484 0 (autoclean) It should look something like this...i running nvidia driver. So it was loaded as NVdriver. I guessed you should be able to see how the ATI driver load if u do a lsmod.

makmak
Ya XFree86 log showed that loading majority of the modules are successful. But u have 2 failures there.... (WW) fglrx: No matching Device section for instance (BusID PCI:1:0:0) found (EE) No devices detected. (BusID PCI:1:0:0) this is an AGP bus. 1st AGP bus always share with 1st PCI. Do you have anything installed beside the AGP card? Also in ya motherboard BIOS. Disable PnP bios. This will resolved some of the PnP's device detection sequence. And ya font's directory did not return a complete transition here. (WW) `fonts.dir' not found (or not valid) in "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/local/". Entry deleted from font path. (Run 'mkfontdir' on "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/local/"). (**) FontPath set to "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc/,/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi/:unscaled,/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi/:unscaled,/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1/,/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo/,/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi/,/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi/" (**) RgbPath set to "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/rgb" (==) ModulePath set to "/usr/X11R6/lib/modules" (--) using VT number 7 You might wanna try mkfontdir as suggested above. I see if i can show u my xfree86.log.
mezz
(WW) fglrx: No matching Device section for instance (BusID PCI:1:0:0) found(EE) No devices detected. Do you have BusID"PCI:0:10:0" in the /etc/X11/XF86Config(-4)?? If yes, then try do the opposite by disable or enable whatever what's there right now. If no, then try to add it under the Driver "ati" or whatever what's driver in there.BTW: Disable the PnP (Play-n-Plug) first as what makmak said. Fatal server error:no screens found Ummm, how about you show us the XF86Config(-4) too?

makmak
You should be able to launch X window.... Can u do that? Or you can refer to the /var/log/XFree86.0.log And see if there is any good indication or not. :)
