PS3, LCD, and HDCP

Recommended Posts

I'm looking to buy a LCD monitor for use with PS3 later on, when I can get a hold of one. Is it important that I buy a monitor that supports HDCP? From what I understand, if the monitor does not support HDCP, Blu-ray movies will not play in full HD resolution, but games should not be affected in any way. Is this only the case if I use a HDMI to DVI cable? If they come out with a VGA cable for the PS3, would this not matter?

all electronics from the beginning source (hd player) to the end destination (your tv) have to be in hdcp compliance. even cables but you don't really have to worry about that. virtually all cables are hdcp compliant. if at least one electronic device is not hdcp enabled then the final video output will be reduced to 480p.

so using a computer, your hd drive, the graphics card and the monitor must be hdcp compatible.

-vga is not hdcp enabled. only dvi and hdmi.

-your ps3 games will be unaffected by hdcp because this only applies to movies.

Alright, so I'll get one with HDCP. Now I'm just concerned about the stretching since LCD monitors are 16:10 instead of 16:9. Is the stretching noticeable? I know some monitors have an aspect ratio button to display 1:1, but I'm not sure which ones have this feature. I'm looking to get a widescreen monitor, at least 19" and spend around $200.
