Firmware 1.300000 released

So I turned on my PLAYSTATION 3 for a quick game of Resistance multi-player, only to be greeted with a notice that a system update was required. And *snap* the console's firmware has been updated to 1.30. That was quick! The update apparently irons out old TVs with 1080i—more info as it becomes known. Word is that we should expect lots of these updates. Perhaps, monthly even. Think of it as after-service for your PLAYSTATION 3.

Yes, apparently it doesn't fix the 1080i bug. This report is from Engadget:

Well whaddaya know. Sony just rolled out a global update for the PS3 this morning, fixing some of the smaller gripes with the console, and completely ignoring the only one we care about. Naturally, most people have been a bit anxious about that 1080i bug, especially since Sony retracted its initial statement about a fix being on the way, so instead of calming our fears with soothing PR statements or, perish the thought, actually fixing the problem, Sony is teasing us all with a re-org of display resolution hierarchy, moving 720p to below 1080i in preferences. Sony also added a BD/DVD image output option, for switching between automatic, RGB and Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr over HDMI. Slightly less exciting -- but still welcome -- are the additions of a utility to backup your SD cards, compact flash cards and USB memory sticks to the hard drive, and a HDD formatting option, to bring your PS3 back to spankin' new status. All that's great and all, but if Sony doesn't currently have 50 engineers chained to desks in Tokyo, feverishly working out a fix for this bug, we're not inviting Sony to our birthday party. So there!

Wow, I didn't think this was possible via normal firmware updates!

Good job, Sony! :D

And it isn't, yet. The bug is still there.

Awesome job, Sony!

IF they didnt release a changelog - I cant see people having the right to whine.

They are probably working on a fix, but gotten to any yet.

Why hold back other fixes/features until the 1080i fix is done?

Lots of updates is a very positive thing!

A Comment on Engadget:

This firmware does fix the problem, AS LONG AS THE GAME SUPPORTS 1080i. Currently, Resistance doesn't support anything except 720p, so you're out of luck until they release a patch for the game. The other games that support 1080i as well as 720p will now play in 1080i. I don't know why so many people try to act like this problem affects them personally. Only early adopters have sets that don't support 720p and these are the same people that paid $8,000-$10,000 on their TVs in 2001. It's getting old that people are trying to find reasons to hate on Sony when they've resolved this issue quickly and its now up to the individual developers to release a patch for their respective games.

Oh yea, there is some risk to being an early adopter and you knew that when you purchased your television that lacked support for the new formats.

Not true at all. Sure many CRT RP HDTVs do support 720p but not all handle the image the same way. For example sonys own CRT based RP HDTVs downconvert a 720p signal to a fixed wide 480p. So loyal consumers who purchased a nice HDTV afew years ago should be punished and forgotten about?

Jesus ****

Have they said they WOULD _NOT_ RELEASE A FIX?

NO, they did not. So those who use the old HDTVs have not been forgotten!

You can start your bitching when they say they wont/cant release fix...ever

I was just commenting on a stupid quote that states this doesn't affect people which is not true at all. Beyond that I never said they weren't going to fix it. Either way people do have a right to complain especially when your brand new $600 Sony console doesn't work properly with your $1500+ Sony TV. I don't see why you are getting all ****y about.

They blurt out things that get them into trouble, and keep the good things quiet. :D

yeah, they really need to turn that around :p

From the comments in the Kotaku article.. They didn't fix the problem. It still downscales 1080i to 480p in games that only support 720p.

:pinch: i hope they release a fix for it asap, just for the sake of the people who have the problem. (yes i'm totaly ignorant when it comes to the ps3 :pinch: does it effect everyone? or only certain people?)

Well, they originally said they would fix it and then they RETRACTED_THE_STATEMENT! Why would they retract it if they were working on it?

Because they might not be able to fix it.

That statement is just to cover their arse...

Why don't people understand that...

Sony made some HUGE promises before so I should think they learned to be cautious as to what they say regarding things they plan in the future.

Monthly? Aww...us 360-ers have to wait 6 months... :(

True (to a point, there have been minor fixes in between those updates as well) but usually the updates to the 360 OS have been top quality and add several new features and improvements.

Somehow I doubt that Sony has suddenly seen the light and is now not exagerating their promises. But that's just my opinion.
