PS3 has a higher tolerance for scratched discs

Does the PS3 have a higher tolerance for scratched discs?

Yesterday was the "decorate the tree" day at my house, and Jess ran to the library while the kids were napping to grab some Christmas movies. I don't have a regular DVD player hooked up... with both the 360 and the PS3 in house, I thought it would be a little redundant. So we put a movie into the 360 and started watching Bob the Builder save Christmas. Of course, after a few minutes it jammed up and gave me the "OMG THE DISC WON'T PLAY" achievement notification that the 360 pops up when your disc has a scratch or two on it.

Frickin' discs from the library. It's like they let just anyone check 'em out.

So on a lark I moved the disc over to the PS3, and to my surprise it played fine. The rest of the movies did as well. All the discs that the 360 choked on, the PS3 played without a problem. While I was talking about this with some of the other Ars editors, it turns out that Ken has noticed this as well. His one-year-old loves to destroy discs, but the PS3 plays on when the Xbox 360 chokes. Of course Ken also raised a good point, which is the fact that the PS3 is also quieter during playback.

Based on this anecdotal evidence it seems like the PS3 has a much higher tolerance for beat up discs than the Xbox 360. Does Sony have the secret sauce or is Microsoft skimping on the DVD drive in the 360?

Nice, i totally agree about Microsoft skimping, I'm sick of my DVD drive rattling and spinning REALLY LOUD, i don't use it as a DVD player but playing games is bad enough.

Again not trying to bash Sony but i wouldn't use PS3 to read DVDs if the PS1 and PS2 laser assembly fiasco's are anything to go by.

Ahhh :) PS2's and PS3's have a higher Laser then Normal DVD Players. I was watching a movie once on my computer and it jammed up so i poped it in the ps2 and hey it worked without a problem.

Same goes for old ps1 games ;) totally scratched pop them in the ps2 and they work fine :p

its a bluray drive right? mabye issues with it

You got a little mixed up there mate, the PS3 (the one with the Blu-Ray drive) has no problems at all, however, it's the Xbox 360 (with a DVD drive) that is having the issues. But yeah I noticed this with the Xbox and PS2 as well, what my Xbox choked on, the PS2 played fine.

The class action lawsuits brought against Sony because of the laser assemblies in PS1 and PS2 kept failing for no reason. I wouldnt use PS3 to play anything other than Blu-Ray and PS3 games.

yep, bluray discs have the data packed more tightly than hd-dvd's (which gives the higher capacity) and so scratches become worse on bluray when compared to hd-dvd so they coat the discs in some "scratch proof" coating so scratching isnt a problem

Sorry but im usually the one saying stuff like that but Bhav wasnt saying the PS3 is the best console ever, hes just pointing out that it has a higher tolerance for scratched discs which is a good thing.

Oh man noroom and sundayx you guys are great

On topic: This is very interesting. I doubt the average person will be swayed towards the PS3 for this but this is still very cool. It probably has something to do with the laser in the PS3 being more precise or something.

Hi,

Info is the PS3 has a blue laser 360 has red.... whats this mean?

well since its blue its more precise and narrow so it going to have an easier time focusing on the problem allowing it to read easier

its the same reason the same size disc can hold 50GIGS vs 9GIGS the laser is narrow and more powerful

it only makes sense that the PS3 has higher tolerance... its drive is a BluRay drive. it's MUCH newer technology than the XBOX's DVD drive. hence it might inherit some more advanced error correction codes...

though i might be talking out of my ass :p

If anyone but Bhav posted this article i would sit up and listen...

Bhav = Fanboy

The fact of the matter is, this is what probably makes the cost of the PS3 so high...

You dont realise that the 360 DVD drive is the cheapest piece of **** excuse for a DVD Drive that i have ever seen.

It has destroyed numerous game discs of mine, putting big fack off rings around the discs, not exactly nice..

It also doesnt open no more, it gets jammed a lot and always asks me to put in a real 360 game..

Im sorry, but this article is 100% true, and althought the PS3 may not be the best console in the world, it states a very valid fact that shows that the PS3 may use better components, even though it might raise the price..

So what if its posted by a Sony Fanboy ?

Even if it is, its a valid article.

I use the HD DVD drive for the Xbox 360 and works like a charm.

I am pretty shure I wil get a PS3 next year probably around Apr-May because in my expierience in the first 2 Playstation

the firsts batchs of production are quite problematic

He didn't even comment, just posted a news article from another source. No need to throw a hissy fit just because you found out your precious 360 is not as good as another console at something. So what if Spartan X always posts negative news with a icon9.gif emoticon and Bhav posts positive news. It's how this forum works. Thanks for contributing to the conversation.

Personally I haven't had much trouble with any disk read errors in on my PS1 or PS2, but then again I don't use them as coasters or frisbee's.
