Tried PS3 at Best Buy. Froze in middle of game!

Recommended Posts

Well just as the title suggests, I was at best buy last night and decided to give the PS3 a go, just for the sake of doing so. They had NBA 2007 and Motor Storm which I know isn't officially out yet. I believe they were on a demo disc or something. Well first of all, Motor Storm had pretty bad framerate but I guess it is to be expected of a demo or beta, I am not exactly sure which it was. The game had some gorgeous graphics I must admit and the SIXAXIS controller worked okay although it was pretty difficult to control the car using the motion sensing capability. Next I tried NBA 2007 which took me about 10 mins to figure out since my buddy and I kept jumping up when the referee served the ball but it ended up falling back down. I will score that to our inexperience and not towards anything else. Now the negatives of the PS3....well there was just one, that I thought was enough. Halfway through our playing, it froze up and not instantly, it started getting very choppy and eventually completely stalled. We called over a sales associate and he rebooted and told us that it has been happening frequently. About 5 mins later the same thing took place. Now not only did it freeze but it also displayed a message shortly after saying the disc cannot be recognized or something like that. My only regret is that I left my phone at home so there was no way to snap some pics to prove this. Honestly though, I still have hopes that the PS3 will get better and hopefully Sony will / has fixed some of these issues that people are complaining about with the console.

Cheers!

all consoles lock up. i've played the ps3 for long periods with no problems and i've played it where it's locked mid demo. same with the 360, while the demo unit itself is an original 360, it still locks up occassionaly. you can't really judge a system too much just by it's demo unit because the firmware rarely gets updated on them like they do on home units. plus at least the ps3 has a demo unit out unlike other systems i'm still waiting for.

At gamestop the other day we played 360, ps3 and wii. Must say when we first walked into the store my g/f and I were like what the heck is that loud noise. the PS3 sounded like a jet engine throughout the entire store. Hopefully its not that loud when you get it home, however the wii didnt make a sound and the 360 just had a low hum.

I was watching someone play PS3 at ebgames and the thing froze too lol. I tried it myself at BestBuy and Motorstorm had some really nice graphics on that Sony lcd. Good move on Sony's part cause the game really makes the PS3 LOOK better than the 360's on display.

obsolete, the same thing happen to me when I went to EB Games at Sherway Gardens, I was playing NBA 07 with a buddy (VS) and the game froze at the 4th quarter 2 times. I must say though I love that game.

Everyone PS3 display I've seen (GameStop, Walmart, and Best Buy) has been frozen more than once (every time I go Christmas shopping I hear someone else complain about it). There was actually a guy trying to play it at Walmart who started laughing because the whole thing froze right after he turned it on.

BUT! I have a friend who owns one and has never had any problems. In fact, he kinda likes it. So take that as you will. Bad ventilation on the displays? Or maybe my friend's PS3 is an exception? Who knows?

Heh I am definitely not hating the PS3. The hardware components are very advanced and there are bound to be some problems. Especially since Blu-Ray is a brand new technology. Yes it is quite expensive but this is why it isn't for everyone. Yes it has problems but unless these problems are caused by faulty manufacturing / bad components (hardware faults) it isn't anything that Sony can't fix with a simple update to the system. Again, iconboy, no one here is hating the PS3 or at least they aren't showing any signs. I just wanted to talk about my experience with it. Now it might be an isolated incident and it is true about the fake system that you can see. The real one is accessed through the back of the booth.

Hard to judge based on that kind of experience. As I said before, I had the Wii at GameStop lock up on me just in the system menu before I bought mine. They actually had to unplug the kiosk and plug it back in to get it working again.

And while that actually did happen to mine at home once - at least it didn't happen during a game, so it didn't really bother me.

Bad ventilation at those stores then.

The gamespot that I played the PS3 at had it almost next to the door. The bestbuy I went to had one under the air...It was tight.:p
