Research firm: 75 million PS3s sold by 2010

The first professional prognostication of the year says Sony's system will win the console wars but won't dominate like its predecessor.

While most of the globe spent the last few days popping champagne and recuperating from the subsequent headaches, business analyst firm Research and Markets, based out of Dublin, Ireland, was busy putting the final touches on its latest examination of the gaming industry.

The company is currently peddling a brief titled "The Transforming Global Video Games Market: The Emergence of Next Generation Gaming," which examines the future of the industry, concentrating largely on the race between the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Wii.

The firm believes that the PS3 will ultimately carry the largest market share, with 75 million PS3s sold worldwide by 2010. However, the company doesn't expect the PS3 to dominate the new console cycle the same way the PlayStation 2 did last generation, due largely to European "late launch issues" and the head start of the Xbox 360.

Though Research and Markets didn't divulge its long-term sales predictions for the Xbox 360 or Wii in today's press release, a quick look at the brief's table of contents reveals more of the company's opinions. Titles of topics include "Xbox 360 is close on the heels of the PS3 overall," "The US is expected to be the largest next-generation console market by 2010," and "The handheld market is no longer a one horse race."

I do love Sony and Playstation, and nothing has ever gone wrong from them to me.

But I think that's a high, a bit too high o.O.

Could they even make that many by then?

Honestly I don't think any console will make 75 million (I only see the Wii having a chance at this). Most likely, we'll see a similar situation here in North America as Japan (granted at a much slower pace), which is that portables will be selling close to or above what the PS2 achieved in it's lifespan.

Don't get me wrong, I love my 360, and I certainly would hope consoles are as successful as they have been. But I just don't see that happening. The DS has become an unbelievable success in Japan, becoming almost as common as cell phones, and here in my city (and throughout Ontario) DS Lite's have been constantly soldout and are fetching high prices on ebay these days. And the last time I saw a game system sale report, the DS was selling 2:1 what the best selling console was achieving.

The vast majority of the PS2's sales came after the console hit a nice, friendly $200 price point. Seeing as how such a price point is unlikely to come before 2009, I don't think they'll even come close to hitting 75 million by 2010. 50 million, perhaps, but not much more than that.

 75,000,000??? I doubt any console will sell that many....But even if they do I doubt they could do it by 2010 I mean over 100,000,000 PS2s have sold but it has been out 6 years....for them to think in the next two years they are going to sell 25 million a year is a bit of a stretch IMO

I'm still awaiting posts of "ZOMG he is so wrong, Sony is teh fail!" :p

The market is getting a lot bigger with people from places like India and China having more buying power.

I have a feeling xbox 360 will also reach similar numbers.

I have already contributed to the sales of the 360, and would like to get hold of one of the 75million PS3s if I could just find the damn thing

Considering both the Playstation and the Playstation 2 sold over 100 million units each, I don't see why they shouldn't be able to pull this off. You all need to remember that the PS2 faced similar shortages at launch and a HORRIBLE game lineup at launch (far worse than the PS3's). To sell 75 million units in 3 years may seem extreme (Playstation 2 took twice that long to sell 100 million, and it was worth half as much as the Playstation 3), but there are more factors to be taken into consideration. One of the main ones being the new markets that are being opened. Asian markets (China and India being the most prominent, but not the only ones) are just beginning to fully embrace consoles. When they start doing so (it'll probablyy be once the current gen consoles undergo major price cuts), they'll see some pretty huge sales boosts.

But the PS2 was not losing it's exclusives hand-over-fist, and also was not at risk to completely miss it's launch in the UK.

There are more factors to be taken into consideration? No, I don't think so. You say they are opening up new markets. What? Are you serious? What new market has deep enough pockets that they can afford to purchase millions upon millions of units?

The PS3 costs double what the PS2 did at launch. And the PS2 didn't begin to sell quickly until it was reduced to the infamous $200 mark. This happened because people simply aren't willing to pay more than that for a gaming machine. They don't care that it plays pointless BluRay DVD's. They couldn't care less about it's ability to check Sony's stocks (:p). They just want to play games.

Perhaps. But certainly not at $600 per console. And Sony sure as heck isn't in any position to lower the price anytime soon.

Basically, this is just another one of Sony's distortions/lies, much like their manufacturing predictions. And we all know how that turned out.

Its 2007

And sony have sold 800,000 consoles..

They will probably have 10 million at best by the end of the year? Even the most die hard Sony fan has to admit 10 is a good estimate.

That leaves 65 million to be sold in 2 years. Unless PS3 goes for 200 or even lower I dont see 65 million people rushing out to buy one.

Theres no point comparing it to the PS2, when the PS2 was around no real competition existed, It wa sbasically a 1 horse race.

This time the 360 has as many if not more exclusives as the ps3 also it is trying to steal many of the exclusives so well see whats happens.

this is just a guestimate... theres no evidence that PS3 will follow the exact trends as the PS2 did. The world changes, and people are careful with there purchases now. Unless PS3 is very low, at around $199.99 in the near future, people will not buy, but who am i to say this is wrong right? obviously this guy has been to the future and knows the PS3 sales.......

i hate people who write articles like this.
