Exit X

how do i exit the gui of linux and just use the text mode.....?

i tried the ctrl-alt-backspace but it didn't work.....it exited the gui but hten entered it again automatically.....

btw, i'm using redhat 8.....

Running killall kdm (for kde) and killall gdm (for gnome I believe) will exit X and take you back to the command prompt. I think you can also hit control+alt+Fx to go to various consoles. Not sure if it works with redhat though.

Quick and easy way which will definately kill it (safely/properly) is CRTL-ALT-Backspace. Shift-Fx doesn't work in X Window since its used to switch to virtual terminals when you're already in console mode.
