PS3 set to cost

Recommended Posts

It?s been confirmed the 60Gb PS3 is set to cost ?425, 20Gb version PS3 will not be made available at launch - official announcement is to take place next week apparently...

Copied and pasted from gamesindustry.bizSenior retail sources have told GamesIndustry.biz that the 60GB PlayStation 3 will go on sale in the UK for GBP 425, as previously stated by Sony UK boss Ray Maguire.

His comments were made in an interview with GI.biz in May of last year, where he defended the price point as "a bargain" for consumers.

Now several retail execs have confirmed that the GBP 425 figure is correct, and said they are expecting an official announcement from Sony next week. It's thought that the 20GB PlayStation 3 will not be made available in the UK, at least during the initial launch period.

The announcement is also expected to confirm a March 23 launch date across Europe, as previously reported.

The UK price is equivalent to just under EUR 647, which is likely to elicit complaints about "rip-off Britain" as Sony has confirmed that the 60GB PS3 will cost EUR 599 in most other European territories. The price for Ireland, however, has been set at EUR 629.99, apparently due to a higher VAT rate.

One retail source said that the higher UK price has not been driven by Sony but by British retailers, who traditionally seek bigger profit margins than their Continental counterparts. /i>

im guessing PS3s are region locked??... otherwise I would just start shipping them overseas... ps3s are all over the place now...

I believe movies are region locked - games are not

...or something along those lines..

disgraceful don't buy one. They should only be $50 more on average than US price for shipping etc.

Given the numbers sony produce i don't think they can even justify that,

They probably make them in japan or somewhere and ship them to the US anyway.

I agree. I am just surprised that people do buy this console which is a rip off compared to US price.

OMFG this just sucks big time, they announced it would launch in Novemeber at that price there has been like a huge delay and they still cant launch with a reduced price, i would have considered purchasing one if it was ?325-?375 guess its not meant to be, well i can wait for a price cut and get one, i doubt i will be mising out on much anyway

Don't forget that in Europe the price has to include VAT, so directly converting between ? and $ is not a valid comparison.

It's still $80 more than what the US users get it for. :\

even after the crap with blue ray and the ps3 games simply notseeming to look as good as the stuff on the xbox 360 i was considdering buying one... deffinatly not now. why are prices so inflated from sony. they compain uk retailers want to take bigger margins, what about their margins? why do they have to keep those so high. i'd place money on sony inflating their margins for the uk market...
