Guys voids PS3 warranty for using generic component cables

Recommended Posts

I hope this guy is lieing, cuz wow....I guess like this guy says, if your PS3 does unfortunatly die, tell them you are using all official Sony products on your system.

Not using Official Sony Components? Your warrantee is voided!

Just got off the phone with Sony Support. Because I have a generic brand of component cables, instead of officially licensed Sony components, Sony has voided the warrantee on my PS3 and will only replace it for $150 dollars!

Their product fails, yet they wiggle out of responsibility. Yeah Im sure that component cables can kill a system. and even if that were the case. What does that say about the system if it can be killed so easily.

So now my system boots up and sits there with a blank screen.

Thank god I kept the receipt. Target allows for exchanges for 90 days or full refund.

My hats off to Target for sticking with their policy. My middle finger to Sony for shirking theirs.

Figured a warning to all of you. If you have issues. LIE! Tell them everything is licensed Sony accessories.

why wouldnt I? I didnt realize that Sony was this bad on their warantee. I plea ignorance then.

In the meantime I hopped on Itrackr found a local target with them in stock and got a new one. easy exchange. they only check to see if its the serials match up. if this new one fails on me then I am keeping all the accessories damnit!

I unpacked the new PS3 and find i odd that the powe cable is unwrapped in the box. I then confirm what I suspected and find that the settings are already set and updated to 1.32. someone had already used this PS3!!! the user name field had "user1boogod" and whoever it was played Marvel Alliance on 1/8. so they either returned it to that target or sony is sending out used units. (and after this BS it wouldnt surprise me)

so a recap for all of you:

12/8 i buy a PS3.

It works fine, beside the random freezing on BDs.

1/16 it boots up only to a blank screen. Sony refuses to warantee it because of generic component cables.

I take back the PS3 to target and get full exchange. I recieve a used PS3, but Target extends their return/exchange period for this exchange.

Now my question is, does this extend to HDMI cables? How bout your TV? He did ask me what TV I had it connected to. If i had official cables, could they void their warrantee because my HDTV is a Hitachi not a Sony?

Needless to say this is the last consumer electronic device I will buy from Sony.

wow that is some crazy policy, i find it hard to believe im afraid. sony might have had a bad year with the rootkit, exploading batteries and delay after delay on their ps3's but i doubt any company would do something like that.

I don't think it sounds that unusual.

They like to see their own product. If they see one that isnt theirs, they can't really do anything since they didnt make it.

It's the connector that's the issue here, not the cables. If you bust your PS3 because you used some $2 knock-off from China, they won't be happy.

What's the difference? Chances are Sony's own cable cost $2 to make in Japan or something. I doubt the connector caused the problem and I have never seen cables that cheap and crappy as you describe for sale in stores.

OK, that's just crazy... Why the heck I'm supposed to use Sony's cables if other brands will do same job, but they'll be cheaper.

Don't be cheap. If you had money to spend in a PS3, you clearly have money to spend on good accessories.

Its like buying a Lamborghini and sticking it some Pep Boyz tires, then one of them blows up and you crash. You're fault for being cheap.

The hell is wrong with you? Cables should never, ever void the warranty, unless you've clearly damaged it by trying to force in the wrong type of cable or something.

Yes, but that shouldn't void the warranty.

Personally, I always get 1st party stuff, mainly because I've bought multiple 3rd party items before, and they've all gone to hell pretty fast (relative considering none of my 1st party stuff has gone there yet, for Xbox or Xbox 360).

You get what you pay for, but that shouldn't have affected the warranty.

Read again, and don't jump the gun so quick on people son... you'll end up in a nasty place.

This is no different from most companies.

Just flicked through the 360 warranty and it states in clause iii of the manufacturers warranty under the secton ?however if you:?

Use the xbox product with products not sold or licenced by Microsoft (for example, non-licenced game enhancement devices, adaptors and power supply sources) or which are not compatible with the device.

Then this guarantee is not valid.

Of course, if they actually enforce this clause is another question

In fact the great mayority of connectors and cables are produced in china,by well known and respected companies, the fact is,that the warranty is voided if we use a lets say....not quality licensed connector under the brand XXX,wich sony doesent trust as apropiate for the correct functioning of the system.

In this case im with sony

this is sounding more like modchips/gameshark. The term "adapter" is ambigous at best. I would hope that it wouldn't extend to component cables or anything.

Yes, I know what you said. But what you're implying is people deserve to have their warrantly voided, (on a very expensive product) because they want to save some money on products which do exactly the same thing as the official ones. How likely is it the a cable (except maybe a power cable) is the cause of a console failure? Not very.

Nasty place... sounds scary.

Sounds like the crap some auto makers went through a few years ago where they would not honor the warranty if service was not performed by an authorized mechanic. Basically you could not take the car to the corner oil-change shop, did an oil / filter change yourself or put non-stock spark plugs or wires in it- everything had to be done by the dealer. It went to court and was decided that if the oil was of the proper rating or the spark plugs were listed by the plug maker to be an equivalent part the car maker had to honor the waranty.

As for the used PS3, it was probably one that was bought and the person didn't like it or decided the money was needed somewhere else so took it back for a refund. Target probably just verified all the parts were there and repackaged it. I've seen stuff like that in a lot of places.

You want me to sound like I'm implying something, but I'm not. But in the end, say whatever floats your boat. Everyone deserves a little bit of fake happiness.

I, for one, would never buy cheap products for something that cost me a good amount of money. If I was able to spend such an amount, I should be able to spend the amount necessary to buy the best for it.

Go buy a Ferrari, and put in some crappy tires. When you crash and you go to reclaim the warranty to the Ferrari dealer, tell them the same argument you use with consoles. I'm sure you'll leave on a new Ferrari the same day.

I think a Ferarri and a PS3 is in a bit of a different league cost-wise... And let's not compare tires and cables, tires clearly do have an effect on the car. Cables don't clearly effect the console.

I agree though, I prefer official stuff, however, sometimes I'll just buy a cheap controller for when my mates wanna play multiplayer. Should that void the warranty?

In the end though, this is all a non-issue, because you can just lie and say you didn't, how are they gonna know?

If I recall, Ferrari's already come with nice tires.

I own the best quality products I can. If I can't afford it, I won't get it. There is an old saying here in Puerto Rico:

"Lo barato sale caro"

I don't expect you to understand it, but I like to say it.

If I recall, Ferrari's already come with nice tires.

You just reminded me that the ability to understand analogies in a discussion board was completely lost.
