Blu-ray isnt looking awesome on my PS3

Recommended Posts

The quality isnt stunning as the quality i get from when I download off the playstation online store. It looks better the ones previews i downloaded then the actually blu-ray movies I own.Is there any setting That needed to be changed?Because i remember i had to change it in the setting to go to 720p for the games I play.

(Also I have a 32 inch samsung 720p hdtv - Any setting needed to be tweaked to look awesome would be awesome if you guys have any! :p)

Thank you my fellow neowins.

The only thing I can think of might be the big "BlueRay" issue that exists on the PS3. Simply, it doesn't downscale to 720p. You need to have your PS3 set to enable 1080i, and it will display Blue-Ray in that resolution. It can't downscale to 720p as I said, so if that's the only option you have selected it will instead downscale to 480p.

There's no way his 32" LCD HDTV can't convert 1080i to 720p. He doesn't need to rely on the scaler in the PS3.

remember folks there is no scaler in the ps3. What he probably is experiencing is either the MPEG 2 issue mentioned above where the movies weren't so great quality plus that it outputs it at 480p. There is no 720p BD movies so they will play at 480 if you don't have an HDMI 1080p HDTV. Stuff downloaded from the store will probably be in 720p since the PS3 does that great..

which blu-ray movie do you own, some of their first releases use mpeg 2 codec which is well blah :(

mpeg2 is fine. The encoding and masters used on some of the earlier releases were not.

You don't understand what I mean't.

If he doesn't have 1080i enabled in his system settings, it won't even try to play the Blue-Ray at that resolution, instead it will drop down to 480p. My comments had nothing to do with what his TV supported.

So you actually have to tell the HDMI output to output a HD res?

It's basically a check list system. I don't think it was that way with the original firmware, but now there's a list of resolutions (480i to 1080p), and you check which one's your television supports.

So if 1080i isn't checked then it will revert to 480p since it can't scale Blue-Ray to 720p. He might have 1080i disabled since for any 1080p supporting games it would display in that resolution rather then 720p (and most 720p televisions do look better with 720p).

And that would explain why Blue-Ray looks so much worse then downloaded videos (the downloaded videos are 720p).

Nothing wrong with that. I would rather be able to choose my own rather than it choose an "optimal" setting.

Ok.. I have no idea what you're talking about. What console only offers "optimal" resolutions? The PS3 has the same resolutions as the 360 (actually the 360 has more if you count the VGA resolutions). It's not like the PS3 (or the 360 for that matter) is like a PC that gives you any resolution you wish (although there's a few exceptions even in PC games).

And despite what you think, scaling is a very big deal. And hopefully the semi-scaling capacity in the latest PS3 SDK is a sign that a full solution is on the way.

Who said a console only offers optimal settings? By "optimal" I'm referring to the fact that it would automatically adjust to the resolution compatible with the TV and display cables being used. "Semi-scaling" eh? I suppose "hopefully" is not the key word as it should be "soon." The console has only been out two and a half months and this will without a doubt be fixed by the March update.. so it shouldn't be a big deal anymore :p

Uh.. And you think a console that is capable of adjusting resolution to best fit any TV isn't better then a console without it? Sorry but that makes no logical sense. My TV has a native resolution of 1366x768 and when the 360 upscales to that resolution (VGA) it looks far better then a pure 1280x720 image. And it isn't even natively displaying that resolution, yet it still improves it.

And no, you can't assume the PS3 has a true solution on it's way. Signs are pointing to yes, however it may require game patches in order to function correctly. I still don't believe there's a true hardware scaling chip inside the PS3. Chances are as I said before, as the RAM/SPU requirements for the PS3 Operating System decrease, they might be utilizing those freed resources to construct a software based scaling system.

If you've read my previous posts, you should realize I have no fanboy thoughts that lead me to hate the PS3/Sony, however I can still talk about what negative aspects to the console that bother me. I do the same when the 360, even if I do prefer it. Can you exit the fanboy realm? ^_^

"Signs are pointing to yes" is an assumption.. is it not? If a game has to be patched then so be it.. with as fast as the PSN and broadband usage are growing.. it should not be too hard to deploy such patches if this happens. Even if it's March when we see this sort of update then there is not a whole hell of a lot that will be effected. As unfortunate as it may seem, look at all the game delays as of recent.. perhaps they have a heads up from Sony that this is in the priority of current works and fixes. Guess we'll see in a month or two. The only true fanboy is one that spouts the word in the first place.

Again, if you read my posts you would know I dislike Microsoft and Sony fanboys equally :p. But I just have to ask.. Do you want people to dislike you? You act so disrespectful and arrogant in almost every post I read that you contribute to. There's nothing wrong with preferring a console or having opinions but jeez.. Show a little respect would you?

Arrogant? Because I support a video game console that some of you do not? Wow. Do you even know what arrogant means? If people want to dislike me (on an internet message board no less) due to my preference of video games and entertainment then perhaps they should get out the house more. I have done nothing but enjoy everything Sony has had to offer this time around.. whether it be software titles or hardware features and I will gladly defend the technology behind it. But to slander somebody for their choice is purely childish. Get off some of our backs already and let us discuss what matters.. Ever realize that not everybody in this world has to agree with your opinion? As the saying goes.. opinions are like... well, you should know.
