Sony Display - A Let Down

Recommended Posts

Ok Guys. This isn't a flame thread, I know it will probably turn out to be one, but with some luck, the Neowin fanboys will stay away for just a little while.

I will admit, I am a 360 owner, and have no intention of owning a PS3.

The other night I was at my local Harvey Norman (big chain in Australia), and they had a display of the PS3 in store, on the most beutiful screen I have EVER seen. Some sony HD model.

They had GT running on it, and I was extremely dissapointed at the quality. It wasn't that it was bad, but for something that is being boasted as the next big thing in gaming, comparing it with my own 360, I found nothing different.

I was watching it for about ten minutes, and discussed it with the sales rep, and a mate I had with me, and we all agreed. The graphics were very sub-par compared to what we were all expecting>

Also, the size of the unit is massive. I've seen comparisons on the net, but it looks absolutely massive.

The only think I liked, for a console that was running for over 12 hours straight, the air being blown out, was warm, I would almost say it was cold compared to the 360.

So I guess what I'm asking.

The graphics, will they improve with new releases, or is this the best we'll see? Because for the price ($999.95 Australian), I think consumers are going to be ripped off to say the least.

So what do people think / know? Will it improve?

Bare in mind people, I didn't research this, I'm asking here to find out opinions.

Do you believe the $1000 price tag will be worth it, or do you personally find it is excessive for the product?

Yeah the graphics in all system improve over the time but the graphics on the PS3 look fine. The graphics of the 360 and PS3 are very similar.

I think the price is fine (the price here and I get the PS3 with 10% discount :p). I can play my PS2 games (its better than have two system taking space), Blu-Ray player, I use it as DVD player too, I want to play games like FFXIII, FFvXIII, Gran Turismo, Motorstorm, Resistance, MGS4 etc. For me the PS3 is fine for other maybe not.

I don't agree with the PS3 being massive though. Place the power brick next to the 360 and it's pretty much the same size.

The power supply is easily hidden.

I do believe that the games will get graphically better as the ps3 continues to age. Compare some of the launch ps2 games to the games that came out 2/3 years later; vastly improved.

Yea, games will increase in quality for sure, but to say it wasn't very good is an understatement, there aren't any games for the 360 that look as nice as Motorstorm does or the new F1 racing game for the PS3, those 2 games (specificly the F1 game) showcase true HD gaming very well. No doubt GT HD is nice, but it felt rushed imo whereas the others had spent more time in development.

Also keep in mind there wasn't Gears of War for the 360 when it first came out, its original games weren't very impressive, but a lot has changed since then. The main difference is the 360 is simulated HD (compressed textures, ect) whereas the PS3 is true HD, granted they both look very similar, so I'm not bashing the 360, but if you look closely you can notice minor things that are a result of compressed textures and whatnot. A good example is nature, trees on the 360 come off very bare, whereas in the PS3 they look very full and life like. But the average gamer won't notice much of a difference aside from how games are played (ie. tilt controller) Its the very picky picky people that will find the PS3 has a more crisp picture, although not by much, at least so far.

It sounds a bit like you're confusing your opinion for fact. Trees on 360 look bare? Fuller on PS3? Hmmm... any examples?

And if you think the PS3 can run uncompressed textures anymore (or significantly more) than the 360 can: LOL. True HD? Simulated HD? Right. That sounds like Sony PR bull.

I think the people at Gamespot that did that article on the PS3 vs 360 graphics wise would like to have a word with you. My impression when I played the PS3 (Motorstorm) was that the graphics were nice a sharp. Then I went home and played PGR3 (a launch title) and felt the graphics were very similar. I haven't seen GT, so I can't comment on it.

Wow if you're the tech guy in yoru friend group, I feel sorry for the, as they'll be mislead by your "facts". since you have no idea what you're talking about.

The PS3 has less memory than the Xbox availabel for grpahics and will need to use lower res and more compressed textures, and everythign today runs on compressed textures. and no you won't see a difference between a well compressed texture on the 360 and a non compressed one. On top of that, the PS3 doesn't actually have the bancdwidth internally to run anythign uncompressed.

Fact is BOTH machines are true HD. as for Motorstorm, you need to read some websites that aren't hosted by sony or the Sony reality distortion affected fan sites.

as for comparing launch games, the Xbox 360 won the launch title comparison in the Fight Night Round 3 360vsPS3 showdown.

Both consoles will give you pretty much the exact same thing, except one of them forces you to buy a BD player you may not want(or rather most peopel don't or even care about) at a premium.

Mature game beating a first gen...does that amaze you or bring a smile to your face lol.Now lets compare the 360 first gen games to the ps3 first gen :D

Or maybe when the Ps3 games mature in couple monthes lets compare those to the 360 first release game titles....

It's obvious that Xero is just kidding around guys, don't fall into the trap :)

Anyway, I'm sure the graphics will get better over time, but miracles don't happen with machines that have obvious limits. Don't expect to be blown away, but anticipate being pleasantly suprised. Also, as a suggestion, try taking a step back and don't be like those who nitpick the details here and there between the two graphics-powerhouse consoles. Looking at comparison pictures or reading arguments (e.g. "wait, PS3 needs a year to catch up!" and "There's a slightly brither picture on this one, but this one has just a bit more texture detail!") will make you go coocoo

So wait.. it has been out a little over two months and it's already being doubted for it's graphical capabilities? Atleast give it some time as some stated. If a developer can't produce a quality game.. then should we blame the console? Nah. The games will most definitely improve visually.. as they do with any console. I'm not sure how you think GTHD is "not that great" but to be honest I think it looks very realistic. I still play the demo for hours on end. Maybe you'll change your mind when you have some time to sit down with it and really get a feel for it.

um the general consensus is that the 360 version looks better, and the ps3 version was in fact worked on for an additional year, so they had all the time in the world to take a completed game and do their best with it for the new system even though original production for both versions started at the same time.

both systems have their better games, both have their worse games, its not about graphics at this point the way i see it, they are equal. its more about the individual games for me now, and ps3 has nothing that i want or cant get an equivelent to on the 360.

even if the ps3 magically pulls ahead in graphics in the upcoming years its such a minute detail, i think the wii has proven once and for all that the gameplay itself is more important than the visuals.

Hardware comparison (horsepower):

http://www.itvidya.com/playstation_3_vs_xbox_360

Games will get better, right now the 360 looks better but i think it comes down to the developers and although i think the price for the PS3 is not worth it, i might still get one just to play MGS 4 and Tekken 6.

Very good read, really shows what the Xbox360 is capable of.
