YouTubers to get ad money share

Recommended Posts

People who upload their own films to video-sharing website YouTube will soon get a share of the ad revenue.

YouTube founder Chad Hurley confirmed to the BBC that his team was working on a revenue-sharing mechanism that would "reward creativity".

The system would be rolled out in a couple of months, he said, and use a mixture of adverts, including short clips shown ahead of the actual film.

YouTube has more than 70m users a month and was recently bought by Google.

The offer applies only for people who own the full copyright of the videos that they are uploading to the YouTube website.

In order for these ads to be successful, a couple of things have to happen:

1) This should be an opt-in program. Not making it so will drive people elsewhere.

2) The length of the ad should be in proportion somewhat to the length of the video. I don't want to watch a 30 sec ad for a 30 sec video. People just don't have that kind of patience.

3) Most importantly, ADS SHOULD BE SOMEWHAT RELATED TO THE VIDEO! Why? Because that's the only way people won't immediately stop watching the video in the first place. If you have a video about cars and you start seeing an ad about prescription drugs or something, you're going to loose interest pretty quickly.

Well, it's good to see that YouTube is finally trying to create a business model. Hopefully this kind of change won't alienate the site though.

Good idea, been needed for a while (and other sites are doing it)

I wouldn't mind having money forced upon me, especially if it's legally mine.

On your end, the idea is wonderful. But for people who will watch your video, it could drive them back and not see it. I'm one of those people, if I see an ad equally as long as the video I want to see, I wouldn't even bother watching the video.

Well, i can't see them putting in 3 minute+ long ad's, probably around 30 seconds or so.
