Pajter
I guess the most professional software is either Cubase or Pro-Tools.. It has a steep learning curve though, but once you get the hang of it, the possibilities are pretty much endless.

MR_Candyman
Nuendo is much more comparable to Pro-tools. Cubase is technically a mid-range product (though still VERY good). Personally I use Pro-tools, and have used nuendo, cubase, sound forge, acid, ect, ect. My favs are definitely Pro-tools and Nuendo though. Of course they are the industry standards and are a lot more money...
dnast
I had been using Nuendo for a year or so and just recently tried the latest Cubase. What does Nuendo have for creating music that Cubase doesn't? (sincere question!) From what I can tell, they are much more similar than I previously thought. jokeripa
If money isnt too much of an issue I suggest Reason and Rewiring into Pro-Tools. AND GET A MIDI CONTROLLER!

As I aid, Cubase is a good product. It however lacks the SPEED above all else. Cubase has a bit more delay when recording and playing back that though is very minor, will take a lot longer to edit accordingly with many samples. Nuendo's also a lot more productivity oriented and you can get your work done much faster (when you're very used to it) than Cubase (again, when you're very used to it). Feature-wise Cubase is pretty on-par with Nuendo nowadays, so for most people Cubase is all they need. Pro-tools and Nuendo excel at being quick to get your work done, something other programs don't do nearly as well.
jokeripa
Update: Since my last post I've switched from Pro Tools into Adobe Audition, its really good. After you get familiar with the interface its your best friend, and you can still ReWire into Reason.

I guess I've never really pushed either one of them as I have never experienced any drop-out even with very low latency settings. That's something to consider when I purchase one of these for my PC - and where I'll be putting them to more use.
tao muon
Acid Pro 6. It can host any other program that can act as a ReWire instrument or midi slave such as Cubase, FruityLoops, Reason, Nuendo, Sonar, Project5, etc. If you're on Windows, most everyone else is either playing catch-up or can be used within Acid. xithium
wow.. good music composing programs.. but, does anyone here knows a FREE (No payment) music composing program?? And/Or has no installation (If ever there is..)??? REAPER is a low cost program with a lot of features and a very speedy development rate. People should make a distinction about exactly what they wish to do. Acid is a great app, but very different from Nuendo/Pro Tools. Programs like Cubase/Logic/Sonar attempt to combine the traditional MIDI sequencing composition with high end audio mixing facilities more akin to PT. Finally, if you do wish a free and open competitor for Pro Tools, take a look at Ardour for Linux and Mac OS. It is very very good. ;)
Jay C
I use Reason 3.0. Very versatile program through Rewire, only downside is you cannot directly edit/record audio tracks in the sequencer, but hey that's why you Rewire into ProTools/Cubase. Best of both worlds. Samboini
People seem to of forgotten drum machines! For this I would recommend Acoustica Beatcraft, I really rate it. It is cheap and a tiny file size; around 8MB I think.

Jay C
Yea I can vouch for that drum machine. Cheap and functional. There are better alternatives, but this is good for entry level production.
Sammyinnit
If you're looking for freeware alternatives, don't expect much. I personally use Cubase for Real Audio/VST recording on windows machines. If I should do pure midi compositions I will use Reason 3. With Mac's I use either Protools, Logic or Reason 3. ProTools and Logic for the Real audio side. Cubase is really good for the bedroom recorder tho, the amount of plugins and VSTs available is large. jokeripa
I'm vouching for Reaper also now. 3.1mb, unexpiring shareware, although only $50 to register. Updates literally every couple of days (so no bugs!). Very lightweight. Very good routing system... infact I could go on for a while, here is a link to its features - http://reaper.fm/features.php
