Nearing Buying Day

Recommended Posts

Looks like buying day is here for me at last, Friday I'm planning to go make my Apple Purchase... Can't currently afford my first choice but I've narrowed it down to 2 different machines with the same basic stats, I've listed them below as I'm trying to decide if the iMac LCD is worth the extra money...

iMac 15" LCD

? 800MHz PowerPC G4

? 512MB SDRAM - 2 DIMMs

? Keyboard/Mac OS X - U.S. English

? 60GB Ultra ATA drive

? SuperDrive

? NVIDIA GeForce2 MX w/ 32MB VRAM

? Mac OS X & Mac OS 9 installed

? Apple Keyboard

? Apple Pro Mouse

? $1860.73$1860.73 (Tax Included)

--

eMac 17" CRT

? 800MHz PowerPC G4

? 512MB SDRAM - 1 DIMM

? Keyboard/Mac OS X - U.S. English

? 60GB Ultra ATA drive

? SuperDrive

? $1646.739 included

$1646.73 (Tax Included)

For those of you who are curious, the bottom line is a smaller monitor, though LCD, for $214.00...

I ask you...is the LCD Monitor on the iMac worth it? Should I go with the eMac and get AppleCare to even up the price...

I'm leaning towards the iMac because of it's moveable monitor and the Apple Pro speakers...

Let me know your suggestions...

Thanks,

Cara

dont get the imac... way to small the res sucks... i love my emac... i am so happy i picked it over the imac. i got a 1280x960 res, and i think the ctrs look better than lcd..

now if you already have a small monitor you might not mind..

I would go for the iMac. My parents are soon getting one. I'm just not sold on the look of the emac. Too much like the old imacs. But you can't beat an lcd screen from Apple. The best out there. I should point out that the imac at smalldog has been used. Click on the CC link to see what the "d" stands for. And it comes with less than a one year warranty. That's the 200 difference between the default config at apple, and the one at smalldog.

congratz on wanting to make the switch :), it seems half the ppl on neowin are wanting to switch :s lol..

just a word of caution: the new imac/emac line is going to be introduced in about a month at the MacWorld event in San Fran, if your planning on purchasing the mac b4 xmas, buy away (if u get a low end emac, u get a faster dvd rom spead, faster cd-r burning speed, and $100 rebate...unless you want to burn dvds), if you are thinking after christmas, just wait till around mid january, theyre expecting new 800-1Ghz imacs/emacs, and possibility of the low end emac being lower than it currently is (and the 17" imac line being more affordable of course)

if you dont want to spring for the 17" iMac, then get the eMac. 1024 is a crippling resolution in OS X, especially with all that screen space a 15" LCD gives you. Its fine on my 12" iBook, but it would drive me nuts on that bigger display.

Well Ladies and Gents, consider me an official Mac User...

My order went in for a 15" iMac with 768 MB Ram and a Superdrive... The reasons I decided on the iMac over the eMac is that this is what one could consider a 'Starter' Mac for me... It's lifespan, should I like it, will be under 1 full year...because I will be replacing it with a High End G4 System with a Studio Display.

This is my intro to the platform and am looking forward to it as not only it will be my first Apple system, but my first LCD Monitor. ;) Has anyone tried forcing the res up a few points? I know I'm doing that on a 19 inch Sony to 1600x1200 @80 when the max is normally @75...so would it be possible to coax a little higher out of it by sacraficing Refresh? Just curious...

Well, feels odd after all these years to be a soon to be Mac owner but I think it'll be fun... I've already started collecting my software that I'll want, not easy! ;)

So, I suppose it's time to start Thinking Different. : LOL :

Thanks for the suggestions everyone!

the problem with the LCD isnt the refresh. The LCD just doesnt have enough pixels to go above 1024. thats the way it is designed.

Wasn't aware of that. ;)

Oh well, as I said, I'm more perdicting that if this machine works out it's just going to be a stepping stone to something considerablly more powerful near the middle of next year.
