Island Roots
Alright, I'm looking at this configuration at the Apple store: iBook 800MHz 12.1" 128MB RAM Combo Drive (CD-RW/DVD) 30GB HDD That runs at $1,299 and I'm sure there there are sites out there with the same configuration for less...I just need to know where. :ninja:
thingsforjason
i think that's about the price you'll find it elsewhere. unless you look at used stuff. prices for apple merchandise don't seem to flex all that much...
frod
yeah mac prices don't flex like pcs because you can't build them like pcs. the only reason you see big price differences in the pc world is due to how much a company wants to charge for labor and packaging. basically you can only buy a mac from one place and that is apple. i suggest if you're a student, asking your school if they have a buying program with apple (aka discounts for you) or you can sign up for the student developer thing and get a discount that way (more info on this can be found in my powerbook questions thread, heh). you can also find things on ebay sometimes for a couple hundred cheaper. most are usually used though. Cara Veteran Posted December 11, 2002 Veteran Share Posted December 11, 2002 As I was also directed here, I'll send someone else their way... http://www.smalldog.com I ordered my iMac (To arrive Thurs!) from them refurbished and received quite a nice discount off the retail price... They don't have any 12" 800mhz as of this morning but you might find something that strikes your fancy there...or just keep watching them, they get stock in frequently according to the rep I talked to. :)
Chad
You can usually get a better deal at places like MacMall, macwarehouse etc. They come with the standard apple configs, plus they almost always throw in a free printer and/or free ram as well. May want to check them out. They are all new machines there as well. Smalldog is good, but most of their cheaper stuff (like cara said) is refurbished or used. Silvorgold
used is always cheaper, theres always a few people out there who are willing to sell there new mac...for some reason :s, guess they must have money, but lots of times on forums theres people who just bought a new computer (such as an ibook or emac) and already are selling it since they want something faster and more powerful the 800mhz ibook is pretty powerfull for a G3 machine, the ibook i have only has 128 megs of ram, and its still faster than most pre-800mhz g3 machines out there :) Results 57.71 System Info Xbench Version 1.0b3 System Version 10.2.2 Physical RAM 128 MB Processor PowerPC,750@0 [800 MHz] L1 Cache 32K (instruction), 32K (data) Bus Frequency 100 MHz CPU Test 82.16 GCD Recursion 66.43 2.59 Mops/sec Floating Point Basic 66.31 223.53 Mflop/sec Floating Point Library 113.73 5.11 Mops/sec Thread Test 54.35 Computation 44.98 362.38 Kops/sec, 4 threads Memory Contention 40.61 128.44 MB/sec, 2 threads Lock Contention 77.46 972.49 Klocks/sec, 4 threads Memory Test 43.68 System 53.42 Allocate 130.90 68.86 Kalloc/sec Fill 19.96 114.47 MB/sec Copy 9.40 56.41 MB/sec Stream 33.95 Copy 33.89 135.57 MB/sec Scale 33.79 135.16 MB/sec Add 33.23 132.92 MB/sec Triad 34.88 139.50 MB/sec Quartz Graphics Test 64.34 Line 68.21 1.74 Klines/sec [50% alpha] Rectangle 61.61 4.33 Krects/sec [50% alpha] Circle 65.78 1.52 Kcircles/sec [50% alpha] Bezier 70.52 766.28 beziers/sec [50% alpha] Text 55.55 935.52 chars/sec OpenGL Graphics Test 52.31 Spinning Squares 52.31 36.60 frames/sec User Interface Test 50.49 Elements 50.49 16.16 refresh/sec Disk Test 56.66 Sequential 64.96 Uncached Write 57.20 21.30 MB/sec [4K blocks] Uncached Write 60.89 21.33 MB/sec [256K blocks] Uncached Read 84.40 12.47 MB/sec [4K blocks] Uncached Read 57.34 21.50 MB/sec [256K blocks] Random 48.36 Uncached Write 48.81 0.82 MB/sec [4K blocks] Uncached Write 48.79 10.14 MB/sec [256K blocks] Uncached Read 39.62 0.43 MB/sec [4K blocks] Uncached Read 56.22 10.82 MB/sec [256K blocks]
