MulletRobZ
Blast it! I just updated my NVidia drivers to version 1.0.4145 (or whatever the latest version is) using the appropriate Mandrake 9.0 RPM's, but now I can't even use the X Server! I was just glad I was able to get IE in W2K working, especially since Windows 2000 was crapping out on me lately! I believe the modules got moved again since I get an error message saying it can't load up the modules for the latest NVidia drivers. Does anyone know how to fix this? I need to know since Linux seems to be the only decent OS out there and I need to get back to it soon! Especially since I got some Math essay to type up by Monday!
mezz
Cut w/ your story and whine. Tell us what are errors that you are getting and much more details rather than a life story of your. At this moment, I suggest you to change from "nvidia" to "nv" in your XF86Config for now, so you can finish up w/ your essay. If "nv" is still broke, then reinstall XFree86 v4.xx from Mandrake's CD or whatever.

+Warwagon MVC Posted December 12, 2002 MVC Share Posted December 12, 2002 (edited) I need to know since Linux seems to be the only decent OS out there Decent OS huh? Not as easy to fix as windows? hehe Edited December 12, 2002 by warwagon
DrunkenMaster
Too bad you have to patch the kernel to get the Nvidia drivers to work. That's one reason I never installed them. If I recall, the drivers make changes to the XF86 Config file. If you change remove the references to the Nvidia driver and run XF86Config that should clear up the problem. Of course you'll have to get into a console to get it to work. Keep us posted if you can't get it recovered from the Mandrake CD and I'll give you instructions on how to do the above. You shouldn't have to make any changes to the kernel. Warwagon, Linux is a bit harder to learn but the work used to learn it is much more rewarding in the end. It is very stable and does the job quite well when you know how to use it. That's one of the problems though. People use Mandrake and Redhat, boot right into X and as soon as a problem happens they haven't used the console at all. My 2 cents.
Glowstick
What's the use of a 'decent' OS if you have no clue of how to fix it. The first thing you'd have tried is what mezz told you, let alone because it is so obvious.
makmak
i have upgraded the Nvidia driver 4145 for 2 Redhat 7.2 & 7.3 Both have no problem. Due to the facts i running Kernel 2.4.20 I downloaded the src.rpm and installed them. Framerate for UT2003_demo seemed to improve by a small margin. I not sure where Mandrake store their nvidia driver. But u can do a search for this nvidia.o and see where it is installed. Alternatively downloaded the previous version 3129 and install again
makmak
go to /var/log/XFree86.0.log Its should give you a indication of the error. BTW..when you install the new nvidia driver. Made sure you are not running the X window. Its wont installed when it is running. I tested both linux box running with the new nvidia driver. Seemed great. (II) LoadModule: "nvidia" (II) Loading /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/nvidia_drv.o (II) Module nvidia: vendor="NVIDIA Corporation" compiled for 4.0.2, module version = 1.0.4191 Module class: XFree86 Video Driver See my XFree86.0.log. Redhat is pointing to /usr/X11R6/modules/drivers/nvidia_drv.o /lib/modules/2.4.20/kernel/drivers/video/nvidia.o U might wanna check where the drivers r pointing to for Mandrake

MulletRobZ
Ah crap! I tried changing nvidia back to nv and that didn't work. I even changed modules.conf to read nvidia instead of NVDriver and that didn't work. As I was reading, I did notice that I should have removed the old files and then install the new files. But here was my problem. I installed 1.0.3123 with the Tarball and the 1.0.4194 with the RPM. To see if this will help, I decided to include my XFree86 Log. Open it in Notepad. I still have the 3123 Tarballs, just in case. I'll try removing the 4194 drivers by using rpm -e and see what happens. If it still doesn't work, I'm doomed! MulletRobZ
Argh! I can't remove the new drivers! So this means I'll have to remove and re-install Mandrake-Linux 9.0! Luckily, Explore2FS saved my Linux files to my Windows partition, so I won't have to worry about data loss! This time, I'll just stick with the 3123 or, wait a minute! My biggest flaw was that I was using X when I installed the NVidia drivers! My bad!
makmak
Webgraph.... Based on the log file. Its seemed that ya Nividia kernel could not load. Thus i believed your nvidia's kernel driver did not successfully install while u did actually had Xwindow running. This is lines... (EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to initialize the NVIDIA kernel module! (EE) NVIDIA(0): *** Aborting *** (II) UnloadModule: "nvidia" (II) UnloadModule: "vgahw" (II) Unloading /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/libvgahw.a (EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration. My P4 running RH7.2 with the new nvidia driver. Its seemed great. But i had one system freeze on my PIII866 running RH7.3. So i downgraded back to previous release of the nvidia driver. I did not removed previous driver. So the revert was pretty smooth. :) You might wanna try reinstall the nvidia driver again and see if it works again. MulletRobZ
But this time, I'm going to use the Tarball method. Also, I just found out how I got the previous version working, so I won't have anything to worry about once my system is 100% non-Microsoft. Also, I just figured out that I can run Linux in just the console mode by selecting Failsafe.
DrunkenMaster
I won't have anything to worry about once my system is 100% non-Microsoft. Seems we think alike :=). I'm taking Windows *almost* completely off my system. I'll probably still have Word and Excel since twits in school won't know how to convert to other file types. Otherwise, I'm not going to keep XP on my system. BTW, re-installing Mandrake is clearly overkill since my solution would easily work and would probably take less than 5 minutes if you know which files to edit. You should learn to do this stuff; otherwise, if you take Windows off your system you'll have a hard time if you have to re-install Mandrake everytime something goes wrong. MulletRobZ
For the 4191 driver, don't use it! Mandrake 9.0 will not be able to use it at all, even when you use the same update functions as for the 3123! It doesn't matter if RPM's or Tarballs are used. akaj23
Also, I just figured out that I can run Linux in just the console mode by selecting Failsafe. You just figured this out? MulletRobZ
But I always knew how to operate the terminal inside the X System. It's no real difference, I find! :alien:
