Buying iBook Tonight...Opinions On Specs

Recommended Posts

Here's what I'm planning on getting:

  • iBook 800MHz G3 12.1"
  • 128MB RAM (gonna buy a 512MB stick separately so I'll have 640MB)
  • 30GB HDD
  • Combo Drive (CD-RW and DVD-ROM)

I plan on getting an Airport card later...I don't have enough money right now for that and a wireless router (gonna make my house wireless w00t!).

That's exactly what I have as well. I lub mine. I have an airport card in mine, but only because I had the extra cash. The airport station will come later. Right now it's just fun to let macstumbler run and scan for open networks.

Well you're going to be a happy camper in a couple of days :D

Just make sure that the ram is scheduled to get there at the same time or before the iBook, because the stock 128 sucks. It sucks really bad and you'll be dissapointed with the computer uneedfully.

One suggestion, do you really plan on watching dvd's on a 12" screen? If so, the combo drive is a great choice. Else, save yourself the money, 12" movies suck!

I frequently make 300-mile trips (one-way) across the state to see relatives, so the DVD drive will definitely come in handy ^_^ 12" will be fine for me :)

Don't waste your money on an Airport card. They have terrible range. Instead, get a Cisco Aironet 350 card. You can find them for ~$100 on eBay and you will NOT be disappointed.

That is the machine I took delivery of yesterday

It's a sweet little laptop. And faster then I expected. It is just as fast as the G4 based eMac I sold. One other item to note. . .one of common complaints of iBook users was the long bootup time. Most users reported it was taking 2 minutes or more to startup. I decided to clock mine. . . I did this 5 times and had a mean startup time of 28 seconds. Not bad at all.

i dont have any regrets in getting this ibook, its handy for portability, the only thing i dont like is how i have to always carry around my firewire drive and ibook (and so many cords since i dont want to use the battery that much), and at times theres way too many cords, but i love the machine :D

and i got a digital camera (HP 120 digital camera) and its automatically recognized on iphoto (without installing any software), and i used it quite a bit (took some pix of friends at a party lol)

Hi, I just ordered an iBook two days ago. I applied for and was approved for an Apple loan, so I used that to purchase the iBook. My order confirmation email said that the merchandise will not be shipped for 7 to 10 days. Is this always the case, or is it because of the apple loan. Anyone who has recently ordered a new mac from apple.com, i'd appreciate any feedback.

thanx,

sacrecow

Hmmm, what shipping method did you select? The ground shipping (2-5 days) was the same price as 2-day shipping via Fed Ex.

I also used an Apple loan and after I got everything sorted out, it only took a day to be reviewed, assembled, packaged, and shipped out. It's sitting somewhere at a Fed Ex hub though. :(
