Netscape, the Mountain View-based maker of the Internet browser of the same name, may be cut to just a token staff as part of a $100 million cutback by its owner, America Online, according to print and broadcast reports Wednesday.

According to the Reuters news service, which cites unnamed sources, America Online will cut some 300 jobs as the first phase of a larger scaling back to save money. Reuters did not detail where within the AOL operation the cuts would be made.

San Francisco radio station KCBS said its been told by workers at Netscape that three-fourths of the staff there faces layoffs and the remainder would be transferred to AOL's Northern Virginia headquarters.

Calls to Netscape spokesmen were not immediately returned. Reuters says an AOL spokesman declined to comment.

America Online Chief Executive Jon Miller said on Dec. 3 that the unit planned to cut spending in the "nine figure" range and might shut down business areas not central to building a high-speed Internet service with new paid services and programming. Analysts have since speculated the dollar figure would be about $100 million.

According to Reuters, the AOL Internet division employs about 18,000 people.

Netscape, one of the first Internet browsers, long since has been surpassed in popularity by Microsoft's Internet Explorer browser.
