Chart-Track estimates 165,000 units sold in two days

Chart-Track has confirmed to GamesIndustry.biz that UK consumers snapped up 165,000 PlayStation 3 units in the two days following the console's launch.

That makes PS3 the fastest-selling home console in history, beating the Wii - which shifted 105,000 units during its launch weekend - and Xbox 360, with 70,000 sold.

Both Nintendo and Microsoft struggled to meet demand with their consoles, leading to stock shortages - but Sony previously stated that the UK would get around 220,000 of the 1 million PS3 units allocated to Europe for launch.

Overall, the PlayStation 3 is the second fastest-selling piece of games hardware in history. That record still belongs to PlayStation Portable, with 185,000 units sold during the handheld's launch weekend.

PlayStation 3 launched in Europe on Friday, priced at GBP 425 / EUR 599 for the 60GB model.

There's something wrong with that... the DS is more popular than the PSP, so wouldn't the DS have sold faster than the PSP?

And in that quote, I hope they mean only the UK record, they haven't sold well here, I can tell you that.

Yeah odd but true i think psp was just anticipated more. look at it like this:

You could also say that even though loads of ps3's are shifting now xbox (just an example) will out sell them in the long run

Well done Sony.

The Playstation brand is far, far stronger here in the UK than the Xbox.

I personally am a 360 fan but I can see how Sony fans are happy today :)

The PS2 has a strong presence in the UK allot of people like that console. Which is no doubt causing the influx in PS3 sales. But the people I know who have bought the PS3 don't even know what they are buying. 2 of my friends have bought them and they don't know what games they want, neither of them had a clue what blueray is. I don't understand why they bought it just as they don't. I can see them both returning the consoles in the coming weeks that's for sure.

I'm really sceptical about this, something doesn't sound right. With the midnight turn out and boxes apon boxes of PS3's, it really questions how many consoles were really sold.

Ah, yet another one who hasn't understood the concept of "Plenty in stock".

I have an idea, lets be an asshat to everyone who has their own opinion on the subject.

I say congrats to Sony, but they still need to play massive catch-up in the largest territory of all where they're on the brink of not even breaking 100k in a given month just 4 months after launch.

Just because he's beating the same old freaking horse like everyone has the last 4-5 days. That's not an oppinion, that's just being uninformed.

Uh, no. Based on all of those launch pictures, there's a heck of a great reason to be skeptical. I'm personally not, but it's not like anyone who wants to be is out of line.

Yet you do believe that the picture of what 2 or 3 launches is what happened all over the country?
