Mandrake Linux 8.2 Soundcard prob

Recommended Posts

I am trying to figure out how to get the sound on this machine to work (bought at walmart) It's still running mandrake 8.2 and i'm not fully experienced with Linux but my friend wants me to help her out so what driver (obviously i'm from windows) do i use to fix (install) the sound on her system.

Integrated Soft Audio AC97 sound

Maybe if i know what motherboard it used then that would help as i could visit the manufacturers site and get the proper linux drivers...

It's a P4 motherboard so maybe that might help

PS - Do you know if Mandrake 9 would have them included? Just might buy it for her.....

here's the system at wallmart

well, the card is compatible with madrake for sure.

try typing sndconfig as root in console, and if you get "bash: command not found" or something similar, install it from the mandrake installation cd and try again.

  • 4 weeks later...

the machine has a MSI MS-6533 motherboard (integrated, sound, video and lan) I have the drivers and i just don't know how to install them as 8.2 doesn't detect it. I would install 9.0 but the LAN connection doesn't work for some reason (guessing the drivers again) but sorta makes no sense as in the sound doesn't work well in 9.0 either. The sound plays for like 1 sec then cuts out (in XMMS or anything else so i guess it's a driver issue)

So ... step by step as i'm a total newbie (Mandrake 8.2) so how do i install these in the simplest terms cuz i know nothing on how to compile or nothing like that.

I got drivers for the video also but i guess it would be the same routine to instal so help?
