How to change icon of an EXE file

Recommended Posts

Hi all, I am new to this forum. Really like the way you are helping needy like me.

I was trying to change the icon of an EXE file. I used resource hacker.

1. Located the EXE file

2. Icon Group > Change icon option

3. Choose new icon > Replace

4. Save the file

Now when I do it, the exe file stops working. Nothing happens when I double click it. Resource hacker however saves a backup copy of the original exe and that was working perfect.

It is only the new one in which I changed the icon that doesnt work anymore.

Can anyone please guide me how to change icon of an EXE file

Firstly, welcome to Neowin! I hope you enjoy your stay here and become part of our community.

Some programs do attempt to detect whether they've been altered, and refuse to run if this is the case. This is rare, however, so I'm quite surprised. What was the EXE file you were trying to edit?

Hi Rob, Thanks for your welcome message.

I made an EXE file of a slideshow I made other day. I was not very much satisfied by the default icon it had so tried to change it by using resource hacker but after I changed the icon the file stop working. NO LUCK!! :(

Just to make sure if I did something wrong or may be the EXE I made was not compatible, I downloaded Audacity Portable Version. And tried to change it EXE icon using resource hacker. And same as before, it stopped working after changing the icon.

Is there any other free utility that can be used to replace icon from an EXE file.

I will really appreciate any help.

That is very strange that Resource Hacker has failed on two different files. Were you using the same icon for both files? Were you using the same version of Audacity?

I am going to download Audacity Portable and see if I can change the icon using my version of Resource Hacker (just off the site)

@ bobp: Thanks for helping out. I downloaded the Portable Audacity from this link http://portableapps.com/apps

@ bluep3ace: I checked out the extension. There is a .exe present.

@ sentio: Thanks for the message. There was no error while changing the icon or while saving the file. Everything goes on smooth.

It is just that the file doesnt doesnt work anymore. :(

Here is a screenshot of my files. Hope to get a solution in this tremendous forum. :)

I just tried for myself, and it doesn't work either. I have a feeling it is due to the fact that the AudacityPortable.exe is compressed in a self-extracting archive. I believe that by trying to edit a compressed file, it fails because it is a different 'setup' than a normal Win32 binary. For example, you can't edit UPX'd files or any other kind of protected files (ASPack, etc) in Resource Hacker, because it is a different 'setup' than a normal Win32 binary.

I would suggest used PEiD to find out exactly what kind of file the slideshow is (for example, the AudacityPortable.exe shows up as some kind of SFX, I forget now what exactly it is).

@ bobp

Thanks for checking the file trying to change the icon. I really appreciate.

I am not very much sure how to use PEiD. Never used it.. :(

Thanks for your help.

All PEiD is tell you what kind of EXE the file is, like what program was used to make it etc. It also detects programs like UPX and ASPack, which would prevent reshacking from working. Just drag the file you want to open onto the program window.

Ok Guys, Thanks for all your help.

I tried changing ICON for a different EXE file and it was a success.

My only guess it the portable Audacity or the Slideshow.exe file which I was trying, were not compatible enough to change the icons.

Thanks DREAMZ,

I will surely try out the utilities you proposed. Thanks for the help!

EDIT: However it seems both the applications are sharewares and going to cost money! :(

I had problems with Resource Hacker, therefore I've tried Resource Tuner.

Resource Tuner isn't free, but you can use TRIAL version to fulfill your needs.

Personally, I was unable to change Google Chrome icons using Process Hacker, because after changing icons, Google Chrome simply wouldn't start.

Resource Tuner allowed me to change Google Chrome icons successfully in a very convenient way.

Resource Tuner even has a tutorial on how to change icons:

In order to create various sizes of icons, I've used trial version of IcoFX.
