New Mac Buyers and Switchers!

Recommended Posts

:) Firstly, I'd like to wish all you guys a Happy Xmas and New Year.

I've just bought myself from the Apple Store (UK) a brand spanking new 17" iMac with

SuperDrive, Airport card and MS Office:mac + Apple Care. Thanks to WK's recent cool thread on

Computer Desktops, I've even shelled out a few hundred pounds on a whole new computer

desk (to be built by a good friend over the Xmas period, in between mince pies and mulled wine!)

My question, Do I have to use Apple branded DVD-R discs to use in my SuperDrive? or can I use

cheap unbranded ones?

;) Also, many thanks to Cara, whose posts I've been reading with interest on her new experiences

with her iMac.

From a complete mac newbie point of view, I know some of the previous threads have discussed

great apps for the Mac OS X, but can you please mention some great titles, which are either free

or cheap!

Cheers

Merry Christmas to you as well! :)

I'm always glad to be of service when and where I can be, as the Mac community here is finding out, my 'Battle Hardened' exterior is more for show than truth. ;) I mean, who would respect a 'nice' Mord-Sith? ;)

Anyhow...congrats on your new purchase, I also came very close to purchasing that same machine until I decided to give the LCD iMac a chance so I look forward to reading your experiences with it. Depending on how my business grows in the new year, I'm half expecting of adding a few more Mac's to the front lines while retiring a couple more PC's. ;)

Regarding the DVD's... I have successfully burned several Imation DVD-R style discs with no issues. :) Just make sure you get the -R and not the +R. The +R Discs, much more rare, appear bigger but they do NOT work in the Superdrive. :)

A few of the titles I've run across in my limited time for Mac that I've learned I can't live without are some of the more common ones... OmniWeb 4.1 (Web - Commercial with Free Demo), X-Chat Aqua (IRC - Free), Entourage X (Mail/News - You have it in Office), Dreamweaver MX (Web/FTP - Commercial)... Those are the applications to date I am using every day (not including things like iTunes ;))

If I can ever help further, feel free to PM me here or post and I'll do what I can. :)

Again, congrats on your purchase and I think you will find Mac users still have the 'Community' that has been dwindling for the PC for many years. (You don't see Versus's threads for Mac related things and you can finally get away from the Intel/AMD affair. ;))

I leave this post with one word of wisdom...

Command Key = Control Function

Control Key = Worthless

;)

I'm looking for some games, anyone know any decent ones for Mac and links?

I've just finished Soldier of Fortune, and I've played medal of honor for a couple of hours. Both were well done, IMO.

Check out http://www.apple.com/games/ and http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/games/ for a lot of game info, downloads and links to developers sites.

Also:

http://www.aspyr.com

http://www.ambrosiaSW.com

Ambrosia makes some really cool looking games.

Have fun :)

Cara: The control key on a mac is usually used to simulate a right click, which will bring up contextual menus. If you have a two button mouse, it usually ends up not being used that much though. :D

A couple of good Apps:

Chimera, a browser built on the Fizilla engine. FAST, supports almost all web standards flawlesly, FAST, did I mention FAST? Versiontracker info here

Duality theme changer. Does just what the title says. Aqua is a great UI, but some times you want to make your computer your own. Duality will allow you to change the theme of your OS X box to whatever you like. Versiontracker info here

FIRE IM application. iChat is great for AIM, but what if you have AIM, ICQ, Jabber, etc? Check out FIRE, it's an awesome application. Best IM app I have seen on any platform! Versiontracker info here

Those are the big ones. Enjoy your new Macintosh!!!
