Should I buy an iMac?

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys! OK, I've been down to my local Apple store and am in love with the new iMac notebooks and am really close to getting one. This will be a 2nd PC for me as I have a custom built XP machine here. My main reasons for getting a Mac are to get something different and I think OS X rocks. It would also be nice to do my net surfing from anywhere in the house. Is that what the AirPort thingy is for?

My questions is, what are some of the reasons you guys would have for getting a Mac notebook when you have a PC desktop already?

None - I can no reason what so ever. And before the flames start - this is my opnion - which was asked for. There are many different laptops you can get - Most of which would end being alot less expensive than a mac.

Which will do EVERYTHING (except run OS X) that a mac can - just less expensive. If your looking to play with a different OS, then put one of the Many flavors of linux distros on your laptop - and have fun.

i think he means the iBook

("mac notebook")

and to be using it anywhere in the home with an airport card

i don't own an imac and/or ibook

(pc user here)

but i am thinking about buying the cheapest imac (15" lcd version)

only one problem: $$$

i will have to wait and save up for it though, if i ever decide to get one at the right price.

still saying macs are more expensive huh? go comparitively price laptops and you'll see the exact opposite is true. ( the only thing the macs don't have better than a similarly priced windows laptop is processor speed which cannot really be directly compared since the architecture is completely different ).

You know, I think it is pretty sad that someone can't post a question regarding Apple computers in the Macintosh forum without the riffraff of the PC faithful coming in here and giving us inspirational quotes such as "theres no reason to get a mac" and "i would never use a mac"... His question was very simple to understand:

"My questions is, what are some of the reasons you guys would have for getting a Mac notebook when you have a PC desktop already?"

He was asking Mac users reasons for getting a Mac notebook.... Not everyone on Neowin their opinion on PCs and Macs.

Granted his question is asked almost everyday it seems lately. I got an iBook because I needed one for my major anbd I wanted to try something different. I can't give you your own reasons if you don't already have them. You stated in your first post a few reasons to get one. Their you go.....

I bought my iBook because I wanted a laptop that would be able to handle anything I threw at it, especially graphics work and some very lightweight video editing. If it didn't connect well to my PC, I wouldn't have gotten it, but in reality, it is easier for me to get my Mac and my PC connected than it is to connect a Windows laptop to my LAN.

And it's damn sexy. :)

To answer your questions.

Yes, Apple's Airport (802.11) is wireless technology that will allow you to access your network from 150 feet from the center of the Airport base station (so 300 feet all the way through.) The antenna is built into the side of the iBook so there is nothing sticking out of the laptop itslef. Done very nicely.

Why get a Macintosh notebook? Here are my reasons:

1 - It's something different to play with. Getting stuck on one platform is not fun, and Mac OS X is a blast to play with.

2 - Beauty. The iBook is actually very stunning. Very well crafted computer in size, weight, and durability.

3 - Cost. It's actually prices *VERY* well. I can post some comparison configs and prices if you would like.

4 - It's just fun. Playing with an Apple Macintosh is just fun. Don't get me wrong, I use XP, 2K and others, but the Mac is just... fun. Sorry, that's the best way I can describe it. It's almost like playing on BeOS again, but better :)

Anyhow, I hope that answers your questions. All in all, the iBook is a great value. I'm sure you will love it!

I almost forgot. Make sure you have at least 256MB of RAM, I suggest a wee bit more.

Currently you can double the amount of RAM in your computer for $40.00. If you buy it at an Apple retail store with AppleCare they will install the RAM for you (and since 128MB is built onto the motherboard, and the computer already comes with 256... You get a total of 640MB of RAM for $40.00! Only good through the end of the year I think). OS X loves RAM, eats it for lunch.

Before you buy, check out Apple's promo page at http://www.apple.com/promo

Again, enjoy your new iBook. It's going to be fun! If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask via PM or e-mail!

As much as I'm not into Macs, I'd say go for the laptop. You have a portable computer, you can learn a different OS, and they DO look cool. I sometimes think that I'd get a Mac laptop if I had the bucks.

A few things to say:

Airport is another 802.11b basestation. It has less range because it has a smaller antenna inside.

Macs and PCs are pretty much just as powerful as each other aside from the typical leapfrogging of companies.

PCs and macs are generally compatible with each other in terms of networking and documents.

I don't use macs. I don't like their closed-ness. I like to be able to control my conputer inside and out. This is slowly changing. Nowadays, you can control the basic components of high-end macs, but components still have to comply to mac specifics leaving you with little variety (think same).

I cant stand one-button mice!

LCDs rock!!

Don't get me wrong. Macs aren't totally bad. Artists have generally preferred them for their simplicity and at the moment they have better software for video editing, graphics, etc.

Most PC-mac gaps are quickly closing. The disadvantages of each platform are quickly disappearing.

Macs are seeming more PCish everyday. (think command line, .extensions, hardware openness, etc.)

Circumstantially, Windows has the most games.

Circumstantially, mac OS has the most digital media software for things like audio and video editing.
